Meet Austyn Crawford of Peak & Pine Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austyn Crawford.

Hi Austyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in my great aunt’s beauty salon and when I was 12 I colored my mother’s hair. I realized that hair is what I was meant to do. I started doing my friend’s and their families hair. When I was 24 I decided to head to cosmetology school. I then went to barber school, I wanted to be completely emersed in the beauty industry. My first job was Great Clips where I learned how to really cut hair. From there I became a independent contractor for a barbershop called Lady James. After doing men’s hair for a couple of years I wanted to get into luxury barbering. My dream was always to have my own business and took the leap after 3 years at Scissors and Scotch. I’ve now been a business owner for 2 years in August.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been an up and down journey the last 10 years. I lacked confidence and belief in my skill set. I struggled to build a clientele due to this. By my late 20’s I realized I do have what it takes and I should just jump.

As you know, we’re big fans of Peak & Pine Barbershop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in men’s luxury grooming. I offer everything from fresh fades, facials, massages, straight razor shaved, and even some women’s services. My brand is offering a safe place for one to be themselves. I’m proud that I continue to showcase this in every service. What sets me apart is my attention to detail down to welcome bags, thank you cards, birthday cards/gifts. Showing I genuinely care for everyone person who comes to my shop. I’m authentically myself and my brand demonstrates this.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like that out city’s residents live for Kansas City. We are not wayfaring fans, we truly love this beautiful little big town. I’d say I least like how crowded everything can be at times.
