Inspiring Conversations with Benjamin Smalley of TherapyKC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Smalley.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I didn’t take a straight path into becoming a therapist. In my twenties, I was working for a small business, and around the age of 26 I started asking myself a question that wouldn’t go away: “What would it mean to live a meaningful life?” The more I thought about it, the clearer it became that what I wanted to do was help people.

That realization was deeply personal. Years earlier, I had gone through my own therapy, and it had a lasting impact on me. I experienced firsthand what it was like to have someone help me understand myself in a deeper way, and I knew I wanted to offer that same experience to other people.

That led me back to school to become a licensed marriage and family therapist and eventually open my own private practice, TherapyKC, in the Kansas City area. Today I work with adults and couples dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, men’s issues, and those times in life when you feel stuck or disconnected from yourself.

People can’t be reduced to a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. Every person has a story, and I believe lasting change comes from understanding that story rather than just trying to make uncomfortable feelings go away. That’s the kind of psychotherapy I try to offer every day.

Starting my own practice wasn’t the easiest path, but it gave me the opportunity to build the kind of place I believe in. A practice where people feel understood, challenged, and genuinely cared for. It’s a privilege to do this work, and I’m grateful that what started as a search for a more meaningful life has become something I get to share with others every day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the hardest decisions I ever made was leaving a stable career to go back to school and become a therapist. Later, I took another leap by starting my own private practice in the Kansas City area. Building TherapyKC has been incredibly rewarding, but it’s also meant learning marketing, business, SEO, and everything else that comes with running a practice.

The biggest lesson has been learning to trust the process. Good therapy takes time, and so does building a business that’s built on trust and real relationships. Looking back, those challenges have made me a better therapist. They help me connect with clients who are facing uncertainty, big life decisions, or feeling stuck and trying to figure out what’s next.

As you know, we’re big fans of TherapyKC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
TherapyKC is a private therapy practice serving adults and couples in the Kansas City area. I work with people dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, men’s issues, and those times in life when you just feel stuck. I also offer a free consultation because I believe finding the right therapist matters.

What probably sets my practice apart is that I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. No two people receive the same treatment because no two stories are the same. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, I’m interested in understanding the deeper patterns that shape how we think, relate, and move through the world. My hope is that clients leave with more than coping skills. I want them to understand themselves in a way that leads to lasting change.

I’m probably most proud of the relationships I’ve built with clients. Therapy works best when people feel genuinely understood, and that’s the kind of environment I try to create every day. My goal has never been to build the biggest practice in Kansas City. It’s been to build one where people feel safe enough to do meaningful work.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is my family. Becoming a husband and a father has changed the way I see almost everything. It reminds me that the people we love deserve our best attention, not just what’s left over after work.

Right behind that is my practice. I genuinely love being a therapist. It’s meaningful to sit with people during some of the hardest seasons of their lives and help them better understand themselves, their relationships, and the patterns that keep them stuck. It’s work I never take for granted.

Finally, my community matters a great deal to me. Kansas City has been home for a long time, and I hope TherapyKC is one small way of giving something back. If I can help strengthen individuals, couples, and families, I think that has a ripple effect that extends well beyond my office.
