Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Tarry.
Hi Ryan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I developed an interest in the human body during college while studying kinesiology at K-State, and knew I wanted to turn that interest into a career that allowed me to help people. I decided to shadow a couple chiropractors in the area and found that the practice style and ability to help people understand their bodies and find healing was something that appealed to me.
I went to Cleveland University – Kansas City after graduating from K-State, then practiced in the Lansing-Leavenworth area for a couple years before deciding to open my own practice. My wife and I live in Lenexa, so I wanted to be closer to home as we started to think about having kids. We essentially decided that it wasn’t going to get any easier to leave my job and start my own practice once kids were in the picture, so I left that job, and in May of 2024, I opened Tarry Chiropractic.
My main mission with this practice was to provide safe, effective, and affordable care to the people of Lenexa and the surrounding areas. I’m passionate about helping people find healing, understand their bodies, and empowering my patients to believe they can find lasting improvement.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think there is ever a perfectly smooth road as a business owner or as someone starting a practice from scratch. I’ve certainly had my ups and downs. My goal through it all is to provide the best care I can to my patients, and learn as much as I can along the way. My practice looks a lot different than it did when I first opened, and I’m sure it will look just as different two years from now.
My biggest struggle has been advertising myself. I’m not a natural marketer. I’m far more comfortable talking to patients one-on-one about their problems, explaining anatomy and biomechanics, and working through their ailments with them than I am with public speaking or marketing work. That’s been a huge hurdle for me personally, but I’m doing what I can to move a bit in the right direction each day and allow myself to be uncomfortable, but doing those things anyways. I think it’s the best way to learn, just not always the easiest.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Tarry Chiropractic was founded in May of 2024, and my goals remain the same today as they were then: help as many people as I can to feel better, function better, and understand their bodies in a way that helps them find healing for the long term.
I use an evidence-based approach that combines adjustments, soft tissue therapies, and therapeutic exercises to reduce pain, improve mobility, and most importantly improve function so that my patients can do the things they love pain-free. I treat a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints. Most commonly I see low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches. I use a thorough history and examination to determine the underlying cause of the complaint, then collaborate with my patient on a plan to address the pain for the long-term.
I feel that my approach combined with my ability to listen and understand patients’ needs sets me apart. I make a big effort to hear my patients through every step of the healing journey, and I see them as more than just their complaint. They’re people with their own lives, passions, and needs, and I always aim to find what makes them tick, then help them do that with as little pain as possible.
I’m most proud of my honesty and integrity. My patients trust me because I’m honest with them regarding needs for care, diagnosis, and prognosis, and I’m always working to further build that trust with my patients and the larger community. I believe that honesty and integrity combined with my evidence-based approach creates an environment where patients feel comfortable and can heal quickly and sustainably.
I designed my patient experience to be simple and straightforward. Scheduling, payment, and communication are quick and easy, and I strive for my process to be as pain-free (both on the actual feeling and the administrative side of things) as possible.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
There are so many! I think one of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is that we never stop learning. I’m always trying to better understand something. Whether it’s anatomy and biomechanics, treatment methods, exercises, or something more on the business side like communication and marketing. I’ve certainly gone through some struggles on this journey, but I think what helps pull me out of it is learning and refining what I do. Looking inward to identify gaps in where I am now versus where I want to be going forward, asking friends, family, and colleagues for input, and working to implement that information has been transformative.
