Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Bennett.
Hi Kyla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I believe we can all relate to a desire for self-actualization and in my own search for meaning, I found social work.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Psychology and Gender and Women’s Studies, I pursued my Master of Social Work degree from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota. I went on to complete a post-MSW fellowship at the University of California-Berkeley before landing in the KC area in 2017. I opened my private practice, Bennett Counseling, LLC, in February 2020. I moved to my current office location in Overland Park in December 2025.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The COVID-19 pandemic as well as cultural attitude shifts towards therapy coupled with changes to managed care have presented challenges to owning and running a private practice over the years. What has been extremely rewarding is working along-side my clients to navigate these challenges as they also address their own struggles. It is a good parallel process.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bennett Counseling, LLC?
I am clinically licensed in Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado and offer virtual sessions to clients located in those states. I see clients in person at my office in Overland Park. I also serve as the Clinical Manager for EDCare of Kansas City and my office is located within the EDCare suite.
I specialize in working with individuals struggling with eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. I utilize principles of Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size (HAES) and All Foods Fit in my clinical practice.
I understand that eating disorders have many facets and impact multiple areas of a person’s life. I enjoy working with other providers in the community to create multi-disciplinary teams that assist clients in healing their minds, bodies, and souls to empower them to reach their full potential. By drawing on a number of therapeutic modalities in my practice, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and feminist-informed therapy, I strive to challenge and support clients as they work towards renegotiating a healthy relationship with food and establishing a life worth living.
I also enjoy helping couples work through past hurts and reconnect with one another and helping individuals manage the changing seasons of life, including workplace stress and burnout, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. My goal is to support and guide my clients as they seek to better themselves, learn healthy ways to cope with life’s difficulties, gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors, and overcome past pain and suffering by creating corrective connections.
What matters most to you? Why?
I believe what makes the most difference in therapy is the trust you have with your provider. Building therapeutic rapport is essential to making lasting change. I like to say that therapists are like jeans- sometimes you have to try on a few pairs until you fine the right fit!
It is also important to know that therapy is not one size fits all-I believe it is necessary to tailor my approach to fit the various needs of different clients.
