Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Fox.
Hi Olivia Fox, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
OLIVIA FOX started from a place of heartbreak. Lauren was having a hard time getting pregnant, and so she began writing songs to get through it. She had previously been performing solo shows for some time, but there came a point that she wanted more; to sing and find community with other women. Her vision was three part female harmony with guitar, violin, and keys. She met Aubrey through a mutual friend and manager. At that time, Aubrey was also going through a challenging time in her life with a divorce. They then met Tiffany shortly after who rounded out the sound with her resonating vocals and violin. Together we became OLIVIA FOX with an aim to empower other women through our music. Sharing our own stories and hoping that others see themselves and their own stories. All women have struggles and we hope to be a voice for each and every one. We are all OLIVIA FOX.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As of this year, OLIVIA FOX have officially been together as a band for 10 years- time flies! We have been through a lot together, both individually and as a band. There’s a reason why bands don’t often stay together- and that’s because it’s hard work! It’s sort of like being married. You have to be willing make a commitment to the band and one another, make compromises, set aside disagreements for the common good and get together for practice on days even when you don’t feel like it (because life happens) and some days are just bound to be easier than others. But the magic is the comradery that comes along with it. Throughout the years we’ve experienced love, loss, wins, losses and grief, and have been able to go and grow through it together. Just like anything else, being in a band with any amount of success takes time, effort and a lot of hard work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We came together as choir nerds who loved harmonies and wanted to sing and play music with others. We call our music “folk pop”. While we love the traditional folk sound, we wanted something a little different. So we started with an acoustic base and added synths and beats with some 808’s and the sound of OLIVIA FOX was born.
We also love a good “flip”, where we take a well known song and make it completely our own, like our rendition of I want it that way by the Backstreet Boys (because who hasn’t had a boy band crush at one point or another).
What matters most to you? Why?
When we were working to come up with a name for our band, we wanted something outside of any one of us that was inclusive of all women collectively. We landed on the name “Olivia” after learning that one interpretation of its origin meant warrior. We loved how this represents the quiet strength that women hold. Most importantly, we strive to create a space that is not only inclusive, but intentionally supportive of other women, particularly in an industry that has been historically male-dominated. Rather than compete, we can build each other up and root for one another. There is room for us all.
