Today we’d like to introduce you to Selene Soto.
Hi Selene, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am Artista Selene♡
pronouns: She/They
I am a immigrant artist. Juárez mexico-born ☆ but Strawberry Hill kck-raised.
I am a Queer Latine artist who pulls from all my worlds mexican roots,Body postivity and turns it into bilingual tracks and stories that hit you in the chest. I perform with my bandmates
” The chingona band” together our sound is a ragey latin pop alt. our music we will have ya hit the dance floor and the heart.
Puro frontera + Midwest energy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growing up as a immigrant in our country was not easy and my family encountered many obstacles. One thing my father and mother both taught me was to never give up on your dreams, and perseverance and hard work WILL and CAN pay off as long as we continue onward or as they said
” Mija echale ganas y ponte las pillas “
They have given up everything to give me and my siblings a better life. They brought me here as a child
and now im honoring their sacrifice by not wasting it. I am pursuing my dreams of being a fulltime music artist. Their bravery , gives me courage to be brave too and to dream BIG and go after whats in my heart.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a music artist and perform in the band called
“Artist Selene & The Chingona band”
Our lyrics and sound are LOUD.
we encourage people to live as themselves and to not be afraid to take up space.
I have one Song called “CHINGONA” available on all streaming platforms. Its A latina/e power anthem. It was also picked up by HBOMAX “The comedy Chingonas” a comedy special featuring latina comedians.
We are currently working on putting out more music and going to be recording our newest song “Fat barbie chola” coming out hopefully July 2026. A queer body postive song.
Lately i write alot about our current politcal climate and have been known for my cover and revision of zombie. Where i talk about Gaza and ICE from a imigrants perspective.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Most of my Songs are Risk takers…
But i sing them anyway.
My lyrics are not always comfortable to hear. But i am a artist not just a entertainer. My lyrics cover topics from fat postivity, queer positivity, The genocide in gaza and Ice brutality.
Its always a risk to share political music and lyrics with a vulnerable message reflecting your own world and community affected with the very sometimes harsh public.
But id rather sing about whats real rather than whats comfortable and entertaining/popular.
Artist are here to remind us of our humanity, and to help us connect to one another. So often music is capitolized for whats trending. I encourage all artist to stand in their authenticity and be bold and brave to TAKE THE RISK.
