Conversations with Shaunita Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunita Phillips.

Hi Shaunita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into entrepreneurship began from a deeply personal place. As a woman who started my menstrual cycle at a young age and later supported my mother through her battle with cancer, I became passionate about women’s health, wellness, and the need for holistic support throughout life’s transitions. Those experiences opened my eyes to the gaps that exist in healthcare and the importance of education, advocacy, and compassionate care.

That passion led me to create **Sensual Selections & Spa**, a holistic wellness business dedicated to supporting women through fertility challenges, menstrual health concerns, postpartum recovery, menopause, and overall intimate wellness. What started as a vision to help women reconnect with their bodies has grown into a space where clients can access services such as yoni steaming, womb care, postpartum support, detox services, health coaching, and educational resources. Along the way, I became certified as a Full Spectrum Doula, Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator, Breastfeeding Counselor, and Holistic Health Coach to better serve the families and communities I support.

As my business grew, I began to see another need. Many expectant families wanted doula support but didn’t know where to start, while many talented doulas were looking for opportunities to connect with clients. That realization inspired the development of **Serene Doula Match**, a platform designed to bridge the gap between families seeking support and qualified doulas ready to serve them. My vision is to make doula care more accessible, simplify the matching process, and increase awareness of available resources, including insurance and Medicaid-covered doula services.

Today, I am proud to serve as the owner of Sensual Selections & Spa, founder of Serene Doula Match, and an instructor with the Spark Community Business Academy, where I have the opportunity to support and encourage other entrepreneurs on their business journeys. My mission has always been bigger than building a business—it’s about creating access, education, healing, and opportunities that empower individuals, families, and communities to thrive.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not always been a smooth road, but every challenge has strengthened my purpose and commitment to this work.

One of the biggest challenges has been educating people about the role of a doula. While awareness is growing, there are still healthcare providers, facilities, and even families who may not fully understand what a doula does. Some doctors and medical professionals have been incredibly welcoming and collaborative, while others have been hesitant or unsure about having a doula as part of the birth team. In those situations, I’ve had to focus on building relationships, maintaining professionalism, and demonstrating that my role is not to replace medical providers but to support the birthing family through education, advocacy, emotional support, and comfort measures.

Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve also faced challenges related to building trust, growing a client base, securing funding, and balancing the demands of business ownership with family life. There were moments when I questioned whether I was doing enough or moving fast enough. However, every family I’ve served and every woman I’ve helped through pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, or wellness challenges has reminded me why I started this journey.

The obstacles have taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of staying focused on the mission. Today, I see many of those challenges as opportunities that helped me become a stronger business owner, doula, educator, and advocate. Most importantly, they have fueled my passion for increasing access to doula care, educating communities, and helping families feel supported, informed, and empowered throughout their journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the owner of **Sensual Selections & Spa**, a holistic wellness practice that specializes in women’s intimate health, fertility support, pregnancy and postpartum care, womb wellness, and reproductive health education. I also serve as a certified Full Spectrum Doula, Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator, Breastfeeding Counselor, and Holistic Health Coach. Through my work, I support women and families through some of the most important transitions in their lives—from preconception and pregnancy to postpartum recovery and beyond.

In addition to my wellness practice, I am developing **Serene Doula Match**, a platform designed to connect families with qualified doulas while increasing access to culturally responsive birth support and education. I am also an instructor with the Spark Community Business Academy, where I have the privilege of helping aspiring entrepreneurs turn their ideas into sustainable businesses.

What I specialize in is creating safe, supportive, and educational spaces where women feel seen, heard, and empowered. Whether I am supporting a mother during labor, helping a client navigate fertility challenges, providing postpartum recovery services, or teaching entrepreneurs how to build stronger businesses, my focus is always on education, advocacy, and holistic care.

What I am most proud of is the impact my work has had on individuals and families throughout the community. I have been able to help women advocate for themselves during pregnancy and childbirth, support mothers during postpartum recovery, educate families about their options, and create conversations around women’s health topics that are often overlooked. I am also proud of helping expand awareness of doula services and contributing to efforts that make these services more accessible to families who need them.

What sets me apart is my ability to bridge wellness, education, and advocacy. My clients don’t just receive a service—they receive ongoing support, resources, encouragement, and a trusted partner in their journey. I combine professional training with lived experience, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping people achieve healthier outcomes. I believe in meeting people where they are, honoring their unique experiences, and providing care that addresses the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.

At the heart of everything I do is a simple mission: to help individuals and families feel empowered, informed, supported, and confident in making decisions that positively impact their health, well-being, and future.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is spending quality time with my family, especially my three children and my four beautiful grandchildren. They are my greatest joy and one of my biggest motivations. No matter how busy life gets, being able to create memories with them, watch them grow, and simply enjoy time together reminds me of what truly matters.

I also find happiness in knowing that I’ve made a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Whether it’s supporting a mother through childbirth, helping a woman better understand her body and reproductive health, guiding a family through the postpartum journey, or mentoring an entrepreneur as they build their dream business, I find fulfillment in helping others feel empowered and supported.

I am especially passionate about education and advocacy because I know firsthand how life-changing access to information and support can be. Seeing a client gain confidence, achieve a goal, overcome a challenge, or experience a healthier outcome reminds me why I chose this path. Those moments are more than professional accomplishments—they are personal victories that I get to celebrate alongside the people I serve.

I also find joy in creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and valued. In a world where many individuals feel unheard or overwhelmed, being able to offer encouragement, compassion, and practical support is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that my work contributes to stronger families, healthier communities, and opportunities for others to thrive is what motivates me every day.

At the end of the day, my happiness comes from both family and purpose. Whether I’m spending time with my children and grandchildren or helping someone navigate an important season of life, I feel most fulfilled when I am nurturing, supporting, and uplifting others. Those connections are what bring me the greatest joy and remind me that I am walking in my purpose.
