Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Schwarz.
Hi Nathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
What started out as just a small 700 sq ft general store, that seemed as if youd walked into the early 1900s at our old location across the street, grew into a 3300 sq ft restaurant, general and feed store. That offers fresh homemade scratch kitchen menu options, while offering the feel of grandmas kitchen. Where we know everyone’s name and treat them like family. No one’s a stranger whether it’s your first time in, or if you come in daily.
My goal was to build a place to bring people to this dying community, and I feel my wife and I have accomplished that.
This town, like many other small towns was dying, just a post office and a bar, now has a General store, the restaurant, and an art gallery. Business breeds business while also building a stronger community, rather than just being known for a fair 3 days a year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like every small business, its even harder in a small town, as the old crowd doesnt accept new business, new family, new anything. They dont like change, so you have to win over everyone, but first you win over the older ladies, open when they call, deliver what they need, fix what needs fixed. Send boys over to mow their grass. Slowly but surely, it builds and then brings in the older men, hard working farmers, then their kids and over the course of months it becomes a place to gather. Mostly the struggle was getting the clients in, pulling from other places, such as Osawatomie, Greeley, Louisburg and Ottawa, and of course Kansas City.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a published author, a jack of all trades, when it comes to writing, social, and here at the restaurant, family atmosphere, large portions, and personal service. Most proud, that has to be my family, wife and kids. What sets us apart, is that of the ability to serve each person that walks in the door as our closest friend, making each and everyone feel welcome, and staying close to the small town feel of things, allowing a slower pace.
