Conversations with Kathryn Sloan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Sloan.

Hi Kathryn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my real estate career as a rental property investor. Having my license allowed me to buy and sell my own properties, and I occasionally had the chance to help friends and family along the way. For about 15 years, though, I wasn’t doing any public-facing sales — that changed when my neighbor, Cami Jones, suggested I join her team. With my kids getting older and feeling ready for a new challenge, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. I’ve been with Cami’s team for about nine years now, and I love helping people buy and sell.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. On a personal level, navigating a divorce was difficult, but it ultimately shaped my resilience and deepened my empathy for the clients I work with — many of whom are going through major life transitions themselves. Caring for aging parents and losing my dad has given me a deep understanding of that particularly tender season of life — the process of downsizing, wading through decades of memories and belongings, and parting with a home where a family was raised and a full life was lived. Professionally, COVID brought an uncertainty unlike anything I’d experienced. At the height of it, I wasn’t sure if we’d ever be able to sell another home, let alone return to any sense of normalcy. Pushing through all of these seasons taught me a great deal about adaptability, empathy, and staying the course.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Realtor who works with both buyers and sellers across resale and new construction throughout the Kansas City Metro — on both sides of the state line. I live in Southern Johnson County, so the bulk of my business tends to be rooted there, though my reach extends well beyond it.
What I’m most proud of is the referral-based business I’ve built over the years. About 80% of my business comes from people who know me personally or have worked with me before. That means everything to me. It’s a signal that the experience I provided was meaningful enough that they’d put their own name behind it and send the people they care about my way. There’s no greater compliment in this business.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is building a business I’m truly proud of — one where people trust me with one of the biggest decisions of their lives. Real estate isn’t just a transaction; it’s deeply personal. When someone chooses to put that in my hands, and then turns around and sends their friends and family my way, that’s when I know I’ve done my job well. It’s not about volume or accolades. It’s about the relationships and the trust that’s been earned along the way.
