Community Highlights: Meet Dylan Flanner of JD Build LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Flanner.

Hi Dylan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I stand on the shoulders of giants when it comes to residential construction. Growing up I watched my Dad and my Uncle build a lot of houses. To be honest, for the longest time it was just a job. I got to work in the family business and didn’t have to go out and get a “real job”. I clocked in, clocked out, and got my paycheck… But eventually as I grew up I began to realize more and more just how much I love the industry, especially the remodel side of things. After 2008, Dad had to almost close the doors of building new construction entirely, and eventually I went to work helping my uncle on kitchen and bathroom remodels, basement finishes, outdoor living spaces, etc. I began to really take things seriously at that time and spent a handful of years honing the craft as a remodel carpenter. Eventually Dad began to take on bigger build jobs again and I worked alongside him. In 2020 I decided to ask my best friend and carpenter counterpart if he wanted to go into business together doing our own kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and decks. He said yes, and we were off to races! We haven’t looked back since and now we make it our mission to change the lives of our team, clients, and the communities we serve through lasting relationships and high quality craftsmanship.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What fun would there be in having a smooth road? Jokes aside, there have been growing pains, as there are with any company. When we first started out, we would take any job that we could land, big or small. This was great – to be able to get our name out there and create a pipeline of referrals. However, as we have grown into a design-build firm it’s been imperative that we market toward full scale renovation jobs. The move from “guy in a truck” to “design-build” is one that takes time, but we are finally turning that corner more and more as the years/months go by.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
JD Build LLC is a residential remodeling company serving the greater Kansas City metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides. We specialize in transforming the spaces people actually live in: bathrooms, kitchens, basement finishes, outdoor living spaces, and whole-home remodels. We’re a licensed, owner-operated company, which means the person selling you the project is the same person standing behind the craftsmanship.
Our mission says it best. We build lasting relationships and deliver quality craftsmanship that changes the lives of our team, clients, and the communities we serve. That’s not wall art. It’s how we operate. What sets us apart isn’t a slogan, it’s how our clients feel when the job ends. They’re genuinely sad to see us go. We don’t treat homeowners like a transaction or a job number on a schedule. We build real relationships, we sweat the details, and we leave behind work we’re proud to put our name on. When you let a remodeling crew into your home for weeks at a time, trust and communication aren’t extras. They’re the whole thing.
What we’re most proud of, brand-wise, is that JD Build was started by two friends who decided to do this the right way: quality craftsmanship, honest communication, and a team that treats every project like it’s their own home. That foundation hasn’t changed as we’ve grown.
What we want your readers to know is that a remodel doesn’t have to be a stressful, adversarial experience. The right partner makes it the opposite. If you want a team that shows up, communicates clearly, delivers craftsmanship you can be proud of, and actually cares how it turns out, that’s who we are.

How do you think about happiness?
The work itself makes me happy. There’s a moment near the end of every project where the homeowner walks into the finished space and you watch it click for them. They’ve been living with that bathroom or kitchen in their head for months, and now it’s real. Getting to deliver that never gets old.
The people make me happy. JD Build started as two friends with a shared belief that we could do this better, and we built it into something with our wives as partners and a team that genuinely cares about each other. Building a business alongside people you love isn’t always easy, but it means something. When we’re all firing on the same cylinders, everybody around us gets better.
And the bigger picture makes me happy. My faith and my family ground everything I do. I want to build a company that changes lives, not just remodels homes, for our team, our clients, and our community. Knowing the work I put in today is building toward that future is what gets me up in the morning.
