Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Spearman.
Hi Brandy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with Black Lemon Boutique started in 2018 as an online boutique. At the time, I was working full-time in a federal contracting role and looking for a creative outlet that would allow me to connect with women in a different way. What began as a side business quickly grew into something much bigger. In 2019, I opened my first storefront and eventually expanded into a larger retail space.
Like many small business owners, I experienced both incredible highs and difficult challenges. After several years in brick-and-mortar retail, I made the tough decision to close my storefront and return to operating online. While that season was difficult, it also gave me clarity. It taught me that entrepreneurship isn’t always about growing bigger; sometimes it’s about growing smarter and staying aligned with your purpose.
In 2025, after spending more than a decade in corporate America, I made another major leap and left my full-time career to fully bet on myself. Around the same time, I relaunched Black Lemon as a micro-boutique + social (a social media firm) on the Independence Square in Missouri. This version of Black Lemon feels more authentic than ever. It’s curated, intentional, and focused on helping women and businesses feel confident, seen, and beautiful exactly as they are.
What started as selling clothing has evolved into building a community. Through Black Lemon, I’ve met incredible women, shared life with customers who have become friends, and learned that fashion is about so much more than what you wear. It’s about confidence, self-expression, and living life out loud!
Today, I wear a lot of hats. I’m a boutique owner, entrepreneur, wife, mom, and community advocate. Every chapter (including the setbacks) has shaped the business and the woman I am today. Black Lemon is proof that sometimes the path isn’t linear, but if you’re willing to keep showing up and evolving, you can build something meaningful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced my share of challenges. Balancing entrepreneurship while working a full-time career and raising a family often meant long days and late nights. I experienced the ups and downs of retail, including growing too quickly, navigating economic uncertainty, and ultimately making the difficult decision to close my original storefront.
That season taught me resilience. I learned that success isn’t always a straight line and that sometimes you have to pivot in order to move forward. Those experiences helped me build a stronger business and gave me the confidence to relaunch Black Lemon in a way that better reflects my vision, values, and the life I want to create.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Black Lemon Boutique is a women’s clothing and accessories boutique focused on helping women feel confident, comfortable, and stylish at every stage of life. We carry sizes Small through 3X because I believe fashion should be accessible and inclusive.
What sets Black Lemon apart is both the experience and the way we buy. Unlike many retailers, we purchase in limited quantities. Once an item sells out, it’s gone. We rarely reorder the same pieces, which creates a more exclusive shopping experience and allows our customers to express their individual style without wearing what everyone else is wearing. Our customers know that if they love something, they should grab it because it likely won’t be there tomorrow.
Beyond the clothing, Black Lemon is built on community. My customers aren’t just customers, they become friends, cheerleaders, and part of something bigger. We celebrate women exactly as they are while encouraging them to show up boldly in their lives. Whether someone is shopping for a special occasion or simply looking for a piece that makes them feel good, I want them to leave feeling seen, confident, and inspired.
The thing I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built. Black Lemon has evolved over the years, but the heart behind it has always remained the same: creating a welcoming space where women can connect, feel beautiful, and be reminded that they deserve to be confidently themselves at the beginning and end of every day. More than anything, I want readers to know that Black Lemon is a boutique built by a woman, for women, with authenticity, resilience, and a whole lot of heart behind every decision.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say authenticity has been the most important factor in my success. I’ve never tried to build a brand that wasn’t a reflection of who I am. Whether I’m replying to a customer’s late-night message on Instagram about finding the perfect outfit for a job interview, helping a woman in the boutique discover a dress that makes her smile the moment she sees herself in the mirror, or sharing the highs and lows of my entrepreneurial journey, people get the real me.
I think customers can tell when a business is genuine. Black Lemon has grown because it’s built on real relationships, honest conversations, and a true desire to help women feel confident and beautiful. Some of my favorite moments are when customers stop by just to say hello, send photos from special events wearing pieces they found in the boutique, or tell me they felt more confident walking into an important meeting because of something we picked out together. In a world where so much is curated, I’ve found that showing up authentically creates trust, and trust is the foundation of any lasting business.
