Meet Gregg Katz of Gregg The Tax Guy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregg Katz.

Hi Gregg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing income tax preparation back in 1995, originally helping friends and family and learning as I went. Over time, it naturally grew into something more consistent as people referred others to me, and I built my business almost entirely through word-of-mouth.

For many years, I averaged around 50 returns annually, working with a loyal group of clients who came back year after year. This past tax season was a turning point, though. After getting some exposure on NextDoor, I experienced a big surge in new clients and ended up completing close to 200 returns.

It was definitely a busy season, but also really rewarding. It reminded me how much people appreciate having someone they can trust to guide them through taxes. After nearly 30 years in this field, I still enjoy helping people simplify the process and feel confident about their filings.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it’s been a steady and consistent journey over the years rather than a road filled with major struggles. I’ve been fortunate to build my business gradually through referrals and repeat clients, which created a solid foundation.

The biggest surprise recently wasn’t a challenge—it was the sudden growth this past tax season. After getting some exposure on NextDoor, I went from handling around 50 returns a year to nearly 200. That level of demand came quickly, and while it definitely required me to adjust and stay organized, it was a very positive and rewarding experience overall.

More than anything, it reinforced how much people value having someone they trust when it comes to something as important as their taxes. So while it wasn’t a struggle in the traditional sense, it was an unexpected shift that pushed me to adapt and grow.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’ve been preparing income taxes since 1995, primarily working with individuals and families. My business has grown mostly through referrals and long-term client relationships, which has always been important to me. I focus on making the process simple and stress-free, and I take the time to ensure everything is done accurately and that clients feel comfortable asking questions. What sets me apart is experience and consistency—I’ve been doing this for nearly 30 years and have seen a wide range of situations, but I still keep a personal approach with every client. This past year, after some exposure on NextDoor, I grew from around 50 returns annually to nearly 200, which reinforced how much people value trust and reliability in this space.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is trust. I want my clients to feel confident that their taxes are being handled correctly and honestly. Taxes can be stressful, so I focus on making the process simple and transparent. Over the years, my business has grown through referrals, and that only happens when people feel they can rely on you. That’s something I take seriously with every client I work with.
