Today we’d like to introduce you to Pam Schmidt.
Hi Pam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Pam, a mom, a wife, and the very devoted human to two dogs who think they run the household (they do). I’m also the founder of HerHaven Home Services, and like a lot of small business stories, mine started with a gap I just couldn’t stop seeing.
HerHaven Home Services started with a problem I kept noticing from the inside. Working alongside the real estate world here in Kansas City, I watched the same scene play out over and over: a woman, often a senior or a first-time homeowner, standing in her doorway trying to size up a contractor she’d never met, hoping he was who he said he was, hoping the quote was fair, hoping he’d actually finish the job. The discomfort was so common it had become invisible. Nobody was naming it, and certainly nobody was building a company around fixing it.
So I decided to. I founded HerHaven Home Services with one idea at the center: home services should feel safe. Not just professional, not just competent, but genuinely safe and welcoming, especially for women, seniors, families, and anyone who has ever felt uneasy about who was standing on their porch. Our tagline says it plainly: Specialists You Can Feel Safe Inviting In. We aim to be the Ritz-Carlton of handyman services, where every interaction, from the first phone call to the final walkthrough, is built around trust, comfort, and care.
Where we are today feels like the beginning of something bigger. We’ve expanded into handywoman work, home repairs, carpentry, all flooring, drywall, painting, and property turnovers, and we are actively building partnerships with property managers and realtors who want a service provider their clients can genuinely trust. I’m proud of what we’ve built, but I’m even prouder of why we built it. Every time a customer tells us she finally felt comfortable in her own home while the work was being done, I know we’re doing the thing I set out to do. That’s the whole point of HerHaven, and that’s the standard we plan to keep raising.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building HerHaven has come with the kind of challenges you can only really understand once you’re in the middle of them, and the biggest one has been earning a seat at a table that wasn’t built for women. The home services industry has a long memory and a particular shape, and walking in as a woman-owned, woman-run company means you spend a fair amount of time proving you know what you’re talking about before anyone hands you the benefit of the doubt. I’ve learned to lead with confidence and let the work speak for itself, and over time, that has changed more minds than any pitch ever could.
The second challenge has been building the company’s bones from the ground up. There was no playbook waiting for me. Every pricing sheet, every quote template, every onboarding document, every workflow our team uses today is something we created, tested, threw out, and rebuilt. It’s been humbling and exhausting in equal measure, but it has also given HerHaven something most home services companies don’t have: real infrastructure. We didn’t just hang a shingle. We built a business.
The third challenge is one I think a lot of customers can relate to, even if they’ve never run a company. We are competing in a market full of lowball quotes from operators who don’t carry insurance, don’t pay their people fairly, and don’t stand behind their work. Helping customers understand why our pricing reflects quality, safety, and accountability has been an ongoing conversation. The good news is that once a client experiences the difference, they get it. They tell their friends. They call us back. That word-of-mouth trust is what makes the harder days worth it, and it’s what tells me we are building something that lasts.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Herhaven Home Services?
HerHaven Home Services is a woman-owned, woman-run home services company based in the Kansas City metro, serving clients on both sides of the state line. We offer handywoman work, home repairs, carpentry, all flooring, drywall, painting, and property turnovers. But if you ask me what we actually do, the honest answer is that we provide peace of mind. The work is the deliverable. The feeling is the product.
What sets us apart starts at the front door. Our entire business is built around making people feel safe and respected in their own homes, particularly women, seniors, families, and first-time homeowners who’ve spent years dreading the moment a stranger in work boots shows up unannounced. We screen carefully, we communicate clearly, we show up on time, and we treat every home like it belongs to someone we love. We like to say we’re the Ritz-Carlton of handyman services, and we mean it. The standard isn’t “did the job get done.” The standard is “did the customer feel cared for from the first phone call to the final walkthrough.”
I’m proudest of the brand we’ve built. HerHaven doesn’t look or feel like a typical home services company, and that’s intentional. From the warm color palette to the welcoming tone of every email, every quote, and every interaction, we wanted to create something that feels more like hospitality than hardware. We want a customer to open her front door and exhale, not brace herself. That softness is not a weakness in this industry. It’s a competitive advantage, because it’s rare, and because it’s genuine.
What I want your readers to know is this: HerHaven exists for the people who have been quietly underserved by home services for decades. If you’ve ever felt talked down to, overcharged, ignored, or unsafe in your own home during a service call, we built this company for you. We are insured, transparent in our pricing, and obsessive about the customer experience. We aren’t trying to be the biggest. We are trying to be the most trusted. And every day, we get a little closer.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Start before you feel ready, because you never will. I waited longer than I needed to, thinking there was one more system to build or answer to find. The truth is you learn the business by running it.
Invest in the boring stuff early: pricing, contracts, insurance, bookkeeping, written processes. None of it is glamorous, but it’s the difference between a business that grows and a founder who burns out.
And surround yourself with people who believe in what you’re building, even on the days you don’t. Mentors, family, fellow founders. That circle is not a luxury. It’s survival gear.
