Hi Jay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mellow Fellow started as a simple frustration in 2018, packing up the car and driving 30 minutes north just to give our dog a proper bath. Living in rural southern Johnson County, it felt like pet care options were always just out of reach. That inconvenience slowly turned into an idea… and then into a vision.
What if there was a place closer to home? A place built for the dogs in our community, a space where they could be cared for, exercised, cleaned, and loved without the long drive.
For years, that vision stayed alive through planning, dreaming, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Then in 2023, it finally took a real step forward when we purchased the ground. Not long after, that dream began rising out of the dirt as we broke ground on an 11,000 square foot facility right here in Spring Hill.
Today, Mellow Fellow is more than just a building, it’s the answer to a need we lived ourselves. We’re proud to offer boarding, grooming, daycare, and self-wash stations to families across southern Johnson County and Miami County.
What started as a simple inconvenience turned into something much bigger! A place built for the community, by people who truly understand it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Bringing Mellow Fellow to life was anything but simple! It was a relentless process of turning a clear vision into reality through long nights, constant decision-making, and countless revisions. What started as an idea quickly evolved into detailed plans that required ongoing collaboration with designers and engineers, adjusting layouts, materials, and systems to create the perfect environment for both pets and their owners. Along the way came rising costs, budget pressures, and unexpected engineering and code challenges that forced tough decisions without sacrificing quality. Construction brought its own set of hurdles, including delays, miscommunication, and the need to hold the general contractor accountable to ensure everything was done right. Timelines stretched, opening dates shifted, and the pressure continued to build, especially in the final stretch when inspections, hiring, and finishing details all had to come together at once. Through every setback and moment of doubt, the focus remained on creating something exceptional, not just a facility, but a space that feels safe, clean, and welcoming, and the result is what stands today, built through persistence, problem-solving, and an unwavering commitment to getting it right.

Hoston Hospitality Inc. is built on a simple idea: great communities shouldn’t require people to leave them to find quality experiences. We focus on bridging the gap between rural and growing areas by developing spaces that serve everyone! Whether it’s hotels, bars, eateries, multifamily housing, or thoughtfully designed mixed-use commercial projects. Our goal is to bring meaningful resources closer to home, reducing the need for long drives while strengthening the local economy. By investing in both infrastructure and the people who live there, we aim to create vibrant, all-inclusive communities where convenience, connection, and opportunity exist side by side.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned throughout my investment journey is that success isn’t just measured in returns. It’s built by taking care of people and the community we’re part of. When you invest in creating better experiences, supporting local needs, and putting people first, everything else tends to follow. Strong communities create lasting value, and the impact goes far beyond any single project.
