Life & Work with Matthew of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew.

Hi Matthew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
NoReturn was born in the hours most people sleep — between concrete shifts, late-night study sessions, and the silent promise a father makes when he looks his daughters in the eyes and knows he has to become more. I’m building this out of Kansas city, Missouri, working a journeyman labor job by day and pouring everything else into a desk by night. Two daughters, an IT degree I’m grinding through at Strayer, a web agency I run after hours, and this brand. NoReturn isn’t a side hustle. It’s the flag I carry. It’s the answer to a question every working father quietly asks himself: am I going to leave them more than I was given, or am I going to let the day job be the whole story? I chose more. That’s where the brand starts.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest obstacle has always been time. There’s no version of my schedule where something doesn’t have to give, and most days the thing that gives is sleep. I build this brand on a phone with a Bluetooth keyboard, in truck cabs and break rooms and at the kitchen table after the girls are down. No fashion school. No investor money. No team. Just me, faith, and the hours nobody else wants. I’ve also had to learn every part of this from scratch — Shopify builds, product photography, ad cutting, brand voice, tax stuff, fulfillment through Printify, the whole stack. Most people quit at one of those obstacles. I stacked them on purpose.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
NoReturn Apparel is faith-driven streetwear for fathers, grinders, and believers. It’s not built for comfort — it’s built for truth. Hoodies, tees, and hats across eight collections: God Quest, Fatherhood, Live or Die, Anime, No Return, Best Sellers, New, and Hats. Every piece is made to order. The pieces aren’t dressed up with stock product copy — every product has scripture-rooted descriptions and a story behind why it exists. The voice is working-class, direct, and unapologetic. Beyond NoReturn, I also run HOO (Herrman Online Outlook), an after-hours web design agency building custom Shopify sites for local businesses, Two brands, one operator, same ethos: They sleep. I build.

What were you like growing up?
I was just a country kid who wanted to be an astronaut. Big dreams, small town, head always pointed somewhere bigger than where I was standing. That hunger never left me — I’ve always wanted more, and now I’m finally in the season where I’m going to get it. Family was everything growing up and still is. And no matter what room I was in or what stretch of life I was walking through, God always found me. Some places I had no business making it out of, but faith was the constant. That’s the foundation under everything I build now — the country-kid hunger, the family at the center, and the God who never let me go.
