Exploring Life & Business with Toya Harris of Providing 4 Our Veterans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toya Harris.

Hi Toya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I founded Providing 4 Our Veterans as a direct result of the challenges I experienced transitioning from military to civilian life after serving in the Air Force. Like many veterans, I struggled to navigate a new identity outside of the structure and purpose that military service provides. The shift was more difficult than I anticipated, and it made me realize just how unprepared many of us are for that transition.

Through my own experience and staying connected with fellow service members, I saw that some veterans face even deeper struggles—often battling isolation, loss of purpose, and mental health challenges. Tragically, some reach a point where they feel that no longer being here is a better option. That realization became a turning point for me.

Providing 4 Our Veterans was created with a clear mission: to ensure that no veteran feels alone, unsupported, or without purpose after their service ends. I am deeply committed to helping fellow veterans rebuild their lives in a way that is sustainable, empowering, and fulfilling. My goal is to create pathways for veterans to regain stability, rediscover their sense of pride, and recognize their inherent value—not just as former service members, but as individuals who matter and deserve to thrive.

Today, my work is driven by a passion to advocate, support, and uplift the veteran community. I strive to provide resources, guidance, and a sense of belonging so that every veteran can transition successfully and confidently into the next chapter of their life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. As a nonprofit organization, one of the most significant challenges has been securing consistent funding. Unlike for-profit businesses, our ability to grow and expand our impact is heavily dependent on donations, grants, and external support. Navigating that landscape while trying to build awareness and credibility has required persistence, creativity, and resilience.

At the same time, the mission itself, helping veterans, has not been difficult in terms of need. There is no shortage of veterans who require support, guidance, and resources. The challenge has never been finding individuals to serve, but rather ensuring we have the capacity and funding to meet those needs effectively.

These experiences have reinforced the importance of advocacy, community partnerships, and sustainable funding strategies. While the journey has come with obstacles, it has also strengthened my commitment to the work and the veterans we serve.

We’ve been impressed with Providing 4 Our Veterans, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Providing 4 Our Veterans (P4OV) is a nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans and transitioning service members successfully navigate life after the military. We serve as a bridge, connecting them to critical resources like housing, employment, healthcare, education, and transportation so they can achieve long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

What sets us apart is our hands-on, judgment-free approach. We don’t just point veterans in the right direction—we walk with them through the process to make sure they actually receive the support they need. We also believe strongly in access and equity, which is why we never charge veterans for our services and we support them regardless of their discharge status.

I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built within the veteran community and our commitment to ensuring that no veteran feels overlooked. At the end of the day, our mission is simple: to make sure every veteran knows they are supported, valued, and not alone.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that may surprise people is that the work I do through Providing 4 Our Veterans was born during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. I experienced a severe mental health crisis while navigating my own transition, and I actually started the organization while I was still working through that struggle.

That experience gave me a very real and personal understanding of what many veterans go through, feelings of uncertainty, loss of purpose, and the weight of mental health challenges. It’s not something I just advocate for; it’s something I’ve lived.

During that time, I also wrote and self-published a book titled Emergent Wings: My Journey to Real Life Faith, which is available on Amazon. The book shares my personal journey through that crisis, my healing process, and how I found purpose again.

In addition to the work we do year-round, P4OV also sponsors an annual women’s health event, which focuses on empowering women, including women veterans, to prioritize their physical and mental well-being in a supportive environment.

I think what people may not always see is that the strength behind my work comes from those experiences. It’s not just about helping others; it’s about turning my own challenges into something meaningful that can support and uplift other veterans who may be facing similar struggles.
