Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin McLaughlin.
Hi Kristin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I learned how to play American Mahjong with a group of mom friends while living in Dallas. I quickly fell in love with the aesthetic, strategy and camaraderie it created, When my family moved back to Kansas City (I grew up here) I realized I knew very few people who knew how to play. So I started teaching friends, family and neighbors casually, until someone told me I should start my own business. So Mahjong KC was born in September 2024! Since then, I have taught hundreds of people how to play Mahjong, formed amazing partnerships with other women run businesses, and helped foster an inclusive and fun mahjong community in Kansas City. I teach private lessons, group lessons, run fundraisers, corporate events, and social gatherings all over the city but my heart will always be in the Brookside/Waldo area where the community is so strong.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I work full time for the UMKC Foundation so balancing my day job, family, friends and side hustle has been a big challenge. Mahjong popularity is at such a fever pitch right now, it seems like the demand will never slow down. So figuring out scalability while embracing opportunities will be my next challenge.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mahjong KC?
Mahjong KC values style, intelligence and community. I offer lessons, open play events, fundraising and corporate events, and other partnerships. My teaching style is patient, enthusiastic, and immersive with keen attention to learning the National Mahjong League rules. I do not compromise the integrity of the game to make it easier. I work exclusively with locally owned, women run businesses who share the values of authenticity, quality, and unique, yet approachable style.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I don’t get to play very much mahjong because I am teaching all of the time!
