Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Pavek.
Hi Phillip, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had been an avid follower of the heady glass movement for a few years before I got into glass blowing. Mesmerized by the colors and creativity in form and function, I became a glass collector and enthusiast. Soon after moving into Kansas City I met a likeminded community and eventually met my first mentor, Dozer glass.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Glass blowing is by far the most challenging medium I have ever picked up. The intensity and sheer chaos of molten glass can be very difficult to control. Not only is the medium itself hard, but the logistics behind the operation is a constant changing dance. Moving 700 lb. tanks of liquid oxygen comes with a lot of challenges.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While creating all things from small intricate marbles, to large stout cups, I specialize in pipemaking. While some would label it a “degenerate” art form, the pipemaking scene has pushed the glass community forward both in technique and artistry. I personally aim to create works of art that are perfectly balanced between form and function. A magnificent centerpiece, as well as a beautifully functioning pipe.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up as a military dependent I lived everywhere from Cali to Korea. I believe this gave me a deep empathy and understanding of people. Despite being shy, I had to be adaptable to find new friends constantly. It is also why I turned to art as an emotional outlet. As something to comfort me in times of hardship, and guide me through emotional turbulence.
