Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe DeMarchi.
Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been interested in working in the film industry since I was a kid. After graduating from KU’s Film and Media Studies program, I wanted to find more ways to collaborate with my peers and came up with THE CORPORATION.
THE CORP was started as a Discord group chat, and the community grew faster than we could have expected. We’ve now reached more than 400 members of people interested in all things film, video, theater, etc. The CORP is a community hub for people to network, collaborate, and find paid work in the local industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Right out of school, it was not easy starting in KC for me personally. I didn’t have hardly any connections in town, outside of my great friend and business partner, Andy Chanthalhaka, and it was definitely discouraging trying to find film work at first. That struggle is what originally inspired the idea for THE CORP. I wanted to make a resource for people with a similar passion and remove the initial struggle of making local connections that I went through.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Personally, I freelance in town on all types of projects; film, commercial, events, etc. I have the most experience in the production or art department side of things.
For THE CORP, we have branched out from being a simple community hub and have started our own video production company. We specialize in all things photo or video and have a primary focus on working with local businesses.
We hope that if someone has a project of some sort, and they don’t feel they have the means to make it, we can provide the resources to make their project a reality.
We have done advertising, music videos, and narrative projects, and are always looking for more people and businesses to collaborate with!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I’ve always collected physical media, primarily DVDs and VHS, and have always had fond memories of thrifting for new things to add to my collection. I have reached over 3000 movies in my collection and still find myself spending too much money growing it to this day.
