Hidden Gems: Meet Andrew Homoly of Homoly Design + Build

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Homoly.

Hi Andrew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The story of Homoly Design + Build is really a story about family, legacy, and a deep respect for the craft of building homes.

Our roots go back more than a century to 1903, when my great great grandfather, Bela Homoly, came to the United States from Hungary and settled in Chicago. He was a carpenter by trade, and what’s remarkable is that he did not just build homes. He passed that knowledge and pride in craftsmanship down to his sons. That commitment to doing things the right way carried through each generation, from Earnie to Guy, and eventually to my father and me.

I grew up around job sites, learning not just how homes are built, but why the details matter and why integrity in construction and a genuine commitment to each project should always come first. In 1997, I brought that foundation to Kansas City and started Homoly Construction. It was a leap of faith at the time, but it was grounded in everything my family had taught me. Not long after, my dad, Guy, joined me, and we had the opportunity to build something together again in a new city.

Today, seeing my son Mason step into a leadership role as Co-Owner and Vice President of Operations is incredibly meaningful. It is not just about continuing a business. It is about continuing a philosophy. We have evolved into Homoly Design + Build to better reflect how we serve our clients, with a fully integrated, highly personalized approach that brings together thoughtful design, building science, and craftsmanship.

Receiving national recognition, including being named the National Custom Home Builder of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders, is certainly an honor, but for us, it is really a reflection of decades of disciplined work and a team culture built on humility, accountability, and care for what we do.

On a personal level, one of the most meaningful moments for me was standing alongside my son as we accepted that award. It made me think of my dad, Guy, and everything he taught me, not just about building homes, but about building a life and a business with purpose. That legacy is something we carry forward every day, and it is what continues to shape how we serve our clients and our community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges early on was growing from a small, new business into the company we are today.

A big part of that was finding the right people. Not just talented individuals, but people who share our values and approach to building. That took time and a lot of intention. As we grow our team, we focus on building a culture around accountability, communication, and pride in the work.

Looking back, that was one of the most important steps in our growth. Surrounding ourselves with the right team allows us to scale while staying true to what matters most, and it is a big part of why we are able to deliver the experience and quality we are known for today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Homoly Design + Build is a Kansas City–based, family-owned custom home builder specializing in luxury, one-of-a-kind residences designed entirely around our clients’ lifestyles. As a true design + build company, we offer an in-house team of architectural and interior designers who collaborate seamlessly with our construction team. This fully integrated approach allows us to guide each project from the first sketch through final installation, creating a cohesive, highly personalized process.

We’re known for thoughtful design, meticulous craftsmanship, and an organized, transparent building process. Every project begins with listening, understanding how our clients live, entertain, work, and gather, and then translating that into a home that is uniquely theirs. Every detail is considered, from how a kitchen supports entertaining to how natural light moves through a space throughout the day.

What sets us apart is the experience we provide. Building a custom home is a significant milestone, and we believe it should feel exciting and collaborative, not overwhelming. Our structured process, clear communication, and hands-on involvement ensure that clients feel confident at every stage.

We’re proud of the reputation we’ve built over nearly three decades: one rooted in integrity, design excellence, and long-term relationships.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
In this business, you must be willing to be challenged. Real progress comes from listening to your team, trade partners, clients, and industry peers, and having the humility to improve. That mindset has shaped our approach for decades. I am deeply grateful to the National Association of Home Builders for creating the Builder 20 program, which brings together builders from across the country to learn from one another, share best practices, and continually raise the standard of our industry. That culture of accountability and growth has had a profound impact on our company.
