Conversations with Naomi Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi Hill.

Hi Naomi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Naomi Hill, and I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. I’ve had a love for capturing moments for as long as I can remember. Back when I was younger, having a polaroid camera was one of the best things ever, and you could capture a moment hold it in your hands within seconds an image would appear, and that instant magic is what first sparked my love for photography. I still remember the excitement of watching an image slowly come to life, even blowing on it, hoping it would develop just a little bit faster.
Over the years, I became known for taking great photos on my phone. I even used to call myself a “phonetographer,” because I had developed a strong eye for framing and could often visualize the shot before I captured it.
Eventually, I realized it was time to invest in myself and my craft. In April 2024, I purchased my first professional camera with the help of my husband, and officially stepped into photography as a business. I still remember sharing that moment on Instagram, announcing to my friends and family that I was now a professional photographer. The response meant everything several people told me, “We already knew. You should have been a professional photographer, we were just waiting on you.”
That confirmation reminded me that this wasn’t just a passion, it was something I was always meant to do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it has not been a smooth road, but I’m grateful for every challenge along the way because each one has helped me grow. I’m still learning every day. One of my biggest struggles has been balancing the creative side of photography with the business side. Mastering my camera is one thing, but learning pricing, client communication, contracts, and marketing is a whole different skill set.
I’ve also had to learn some tough lessons about people. Being new in the industry and genuinely excited to connect with other professionals, I didn’t always recognize when someone didn’t have the best intentions. That experience taught me the importance of protecting my work, setting boundaries, and trusting my instincts.
Another challenge has been realizing that you can’t do everything at once. Photography is so much more than just “pressing a button.” There’s editing software, lighting techniques, client experience, and ongoing education it’s a constant process of growth.
The mistakes I’ve made have been some of my greatest teachers. They’ve made me stronger, more aware, and more confident in both my craft and my business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I first started professional photography, I tried to capture everything and never wanted to turn down an opportunity. Over time, I realized you can’t do it all, and that clarity helped me focus on what I truly love.
I naturally gravitated back to what I had been doing from the beginning: capturing people in real moments. Today, Naomi Hill Photography specializes in corporate events and headshot photography.
I’m known for bringing an upbeat, engaging energy that helps people feel comfortable in front of the camera, which leads to more authentic, high-quality images. What truly sets me apart is my ability to deliver photos in real time clients and guests can receive their images while the event is still happening. It’s a game changer for engagement and overall experience. I’m not just capturing moments I’m creating experiences that people can enjoy instantly and remember for a lifetime. At the core of my brand, I believe in community over competition. Having that mindset has rewarded me with some of the best relationships and I could just cry thinking about all the love I give and receive from the genuine people who want to see me win.
I would also like to add being a member of Professional Photographers of America has played a major role in my journey, and attending Imaging USA 2025 was a turning point that elevated both my mindset and my business. I met some of my best friends and that is something I will always be grateful for. My time at Texas School of Professional Photography that same year added to my skills and confidence, and this year being part of a cohort named “StartSmart” with the Missouri Small Business Development Center has further elevated my growth as an entrepreneur. Alongside that, I’ve cultivated a strong, global network of support of people who inspires me, challenges me, and propels me forward.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’d say persistence and genuine passion are at the heart of my success. I’m deeply humble, naturally friendly, and never afraid to ask for help when I need it. At my core, I will always be a student who is open, curious, and committed to learning and growing in every season of my journey. I stay consistent, continue to evolve, and bring an energy that naturally shapes the experience I create for my clients. I don’t just show up to capture moments I am the experience.
