Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Williams.
Hi Robert, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I didn’t find my purpose in a classroom or a boardroom—I found it behind a fence, with dirt under my fingernails.
While I was incarcerated, my assigned job was the yard crew. On paper, it was just maintenance: trimming, mowing, keeping the inner perimeter of the institution in order. But somewhere between the sweat, the quiet focus, and the rhythm of the work, something unexpected happened. What started as an assignment became a passion. I was drawn to the transformation—to taking something wild, overgrown, and neglected and reshaping it into something intentional and beautiful. For the first time in a long time, I could see the results of my effort clearly—and I could own them.
That realization stayed with me.
When I was released in September 2021, I knew one thing for certain: I wanted to keep doing this work. Not just landscaping—but transforming spaces, and in the process, continuing to transform myself. I started small. I invested in a few basic pieces of lawn equipment and began maintaining my mother’s property. She noticed how seriously I took it—how energized I was—and she saw opportunity where others might have only seen survival. Without hesitation, she volunteered my services to a few friends who needed help with their yards.
That was the spark.
I started with just five lawns. Before long, word spread. Five turned into ten. Ten turned into twenty, then thirty. As the workload grew, so did my vision. I upgraded my equipment step by step—from a push mower to a riding mower, then to a stand up zero turn. One mower became five. Working alone turned into building a crew. Eventually, I was no longer doing everything myself—I was leading a team of five.
But the growth wasn’t only about business.
Along the way, I began teaching my nephews the science behind landscaping—the why, not just the how. Soil health. Growth cycles. Precision. Responsibility. Pride in craftsmanship. What once helped me rebuild my sense of purpose became a way to pass knowledge forward, to show the next generation what consistency and care can produce over time.
Today, when I look at a freshly cut lawn or a perfectly edged property, I don’t just see grass—I see proof. Proof that purpose can be found in unexpected places. Proof that second chances can grow into something sustainable. And proof that with patience, discipline, and vision, even the wildest beginnings can be shaped into something strong and lasting.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No—it hasn’t been a smooth road. Not even close.
The hardest part wasn’t the work. It wasn’t the long days, the equipment breakdowns, or the pressure of learning an industry from scratch. The real struggle was something heavier: starting a business without a roadmap, without connections, and without anyone willing to take a chance on me as a person.
When I came home, I didn’t know the business side of landscaping. I didn’t have mentors. I didn’t have access to networks where doors quietly open for people who look like they “belong.” What I did have was a past—one that followed me into every room. I’m a street dude with a reputation for violence, and no matter how much work you put into changing, most people don’t care about who you are now. They remember who you were when you were at your worst.
That reality shows up fast when you’re trying to build something honest.
There were moments when I could feel people calculating whether I was worth trusting—whether the growth was real or temporary, whether the change would last. And that kind of judgment wears on you. It forces you to work twice as hard just to be seen as equal, and three times as hard to be believed.
But those same struggles clarified something for me.
I realized early on that if I ever built something solid—something with structure, opportunity, and longevity—I was going to use it differently. That’s why I’m proud to hire people who are justice involved. People who have records. People who have been written off. People who need not just a second chance, but sometimes a third, fourth, or fifth before things finally stick.
I know what it feels like when no one is willing to be your mentor, when all anyone sees is your rap sheet and not your effort. I know what it’s like to be judged forever by your past. And I also know how powerful it is when someone finally says, “I see who you’re becoming.”
The road hasn’t been smooth—but it’s been honest. And every obstacle reinforced the same belief: redemption isn’t theoretical. It’s built through opportunity, consistency, and someone being willing to stand beside you long enough for the change to take root.
That’s the work now—on and off the lawn.
We’ve been impressed with XGR Landscape, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
XGR Landscape is more than a lawn care company—it’s a brand built on strength, responsibility, and pride in craftsmanship. From the moment you encounter our shield logo, you understand our promise: your landscape is protected here. That shield isn’t marketing—it’s a mindset.
Founded on the belief that outdoor spaces deserve the same care and precision as any interior investment, XGR Landscape provides residential and commercial grounds maintenance, full scale landscaping, and home and lot clean out services. We serve everything from family homes to commercial properties, handling weekly mowing and fertilization programs, seasonal cleanups, aeration, mulching, snow removal, and complex property transformations—all under one trusted name.
What truly sets XGR Landscape apart is our “defend and enhance” philosophy. We don’t just cut grass or remove debris—we fortify properties. Every blade of grass, every edge line, every stone placement is intentional. Our work blends durability with design, ensuring landscapes don’t just look good today, but continue to thrive over time.
Another defining part of our brand is versatility. Many companies specialize in just one lane—mowing, snow removal, or cleanup. XGR Landscape is intentionally comprehensive. Our home and lot clean out services are designed to bring neglected or overwhelmed properties back to life, including high needs situations like foreclosures, evictions, and extreme cleanouts. This ability to step into complex environments and deliver order is part of what clients rely on us for most.
Brand wise, what we’re most proud of is trust. Trust from homeowners who know their lawns will be handled with care. Trust from commercial clients who depend on us to protect large investments. And trust that comes from showing up—consistently, professionally, and with pride. XGR Landscape is known for reliability, precision, and standing behind our work just as firmly as the shield in our logo represents.
What we want readers to know most is this: XGR Landscape is built with purpose. We believe outdoor spaces reflect the care placed into them, and we approach every property—large or small—as a reflection of our standards. With XGR, landscaping isn’t just maintenance; it’s stewardship. Your property isn’t just serviced—it’s defended, strengthened, and elevated.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Robert Williams no longer wanted to sit on the sidelines.
After rebuilding his life and business, he knew personal success wasn’t enough. He wanted to be proactive—not only in supporting individuals with a justice involved background returning to the community, but also in preventing at risk youth from ever entering the same system. That conviction led him beyond entrepreneurship and into leadership.
Today, Robert serves as President and one of the lead facilitators of Co Parenting Ikigai, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to strengthening families, disrupting cycles of incarceration, and creating pathways to purpose. Through this work, he oversees MAN TIME, a transformative program focused on empowering men—particularly those with justice involved backgrounds—by addressing the seven most pressing challenges they face when reentering society. The program is built on real conversation, mentorship, and practical support, creating a space for growth, healing, and leadership—from the block to the boardroom.
He also facilitates YOUNG KING’S TIME, a 14 week, trauma informed program designed for young adult males at risk of incarceration. Grounded in evidence based, cognitive behavioral skill development, the program focuses on strengthening emotional regulation, problem solving, and decision making—tools shown to reduce juvenile recidivism by up to 26 percent. For Robert, intervention isn’t abstract—it’s personal, immediate, and necessary.
That commitment comes into full view this year as Co Parenting Ikigai prepares to host its first annual fundraiser, the Date with Dad Gala, on June 20, 2026, at 800 E. 18th Street in Kansas City. The event centers on restoring dignity, celebrating fatherhood, and reinforcing family bonds—values deeply aligned with the organization’s mission. Adding to the significance of the night, Amor Suits is donating a custom made tuxedo for each attending dad, ensuring that every father shows up feeling proud, confident, and seen. Tickets are available for purchase at www.CoParentingIkigai.org through May 10, 2026.
Robert’s work with Co Parenting Ikigai mirrors how he views his city.
What he loves most about it is its potential.
“There’s something powerful here,” he says. “A quiet but undeniable ability for people to come together and show up for one another when it truly matters.” He’s witnessed it in moments that don’t make headlines—in neighbors helping neighbors, in acts of service that preserve dignity. Robert regularly provides landscaping services free of charge to elderly residents, particularly within the Black community, because he believes care should never be conditional. Those moments, he says, are when the city feels like home.
“At its best, this is a place where community still means something,” he reflects. “Where support, compassion, and shared responsibility are possible if we choose them.”
What weighs on him is the other side of the reality—the violence, the repeated cycles, and the lack of consistent support for small Black owned businesses within the very communities they serve. “There’s so much talent, resilience, and innovation right here,” he says, “but too often it isn’t protected or nurtured.” Instead of collective growth, division and neglect are sometimes allowed to take hold—and for someone who sees what’s possible, that’s painful.
Still, Robert remains hopeful.
“This city has everything it needs to thrive,” he says. “The question is whether we’re willing to invest in each other, support the people doing the real work on the ground, and choose community over conflict.” Through his business, his nonprofit leadership, and events like the Date with Dad Gala, Robert Williams continues to prove that belief doesn’t end with words—it’s built through action.
