Rising Stars: Meet Kory Kirkegaard of Overland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kory Kirkegaard.

Hi Kory, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Topeka, Kansas, and from a young age I was drawn to the medical field. My dad was an ophthalmologist, so I was around healthcare early on, and that definitely shaped the way I saw my future. Funny enough, dentistry was not my original plan. I had a bit of an unexpected “a-ha” moment one day at the barber, which led me to shadow a local dentist. Once I saw the blend of healthcare, artistry, problem-solving, and patient relationships, I was hooked.

I went on to earn my Biology degree, with a minor in Business, from the University of Kansas, and then completed dental school at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Chicago. After that, my wonderful wife and I, decided to come back home to Kansas and build something of our own.

That eventually became The Art of Dentistry – Kory Kirkegaard, DMD in Overland Park. My goal has always been to create a practice centered on quality, honesty, and kindness, while staying at the forefront of technology and modern dentistry. I wanted to build a place where patients feel comfortable, cared for, and never pushed into treatment they do not need.

Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to serve a community I love, alongside an amazing team and my wife Lauren, who is also part of the practice. We have built something that reflects who we are both professionally and personally, and I am proud that we have created an environment that feels more welcoming, down-to-earth, and human than what people often expect from a dental office.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If anything has felt smooth, a lot of the credit goes to my wife, Lauren, and her incredible focus and organizational skills. But overall, it definitely has not been a perfectly smooth road. We opened about 15 months before COVID, so just as we were starting to get established, everything came to a halt. That brought plenty of challenges, along with some opportunities to step back and get really clear on who we wanted to be as a practice.

Since then, one of the biggest priorities has been staying true to our vision of slow, high-quality, comfort-driven dentistry. That approach takes intention, and sometimes it means choosing a harder path, but we feel very grateful that we have been able to build an office around those values.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We practice almost all aspects of general dentistry, but we are especially passionate about quality-driven care and cosmetic dentistry. A big part of what we do is veneers and smile makeovers, and that is an area we truly love.

One thing we are especially proud of is our ability to use newer technology, including 3D-printed veneers, to create beautiful smile transformations in a much more conservative way. In many cases, that means no cutting of healthy tooth structure, no shots, and a very easy experience for the patient. Sometimes we can completely change someone’s smile in just two appointments.

What sets us apart is our commitment to doing dentistry at a very high level while keeping the experience comfortable and personal. That includes everything from our approach to treatment to the presence of our therapy dog, Ivy, a standard poodle who helps many of our patients feel more relaxed and at ease.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way to work with us is to connect with our office directly. We welcome patients looking for comprehensive dental care, cosmetic dentistry, veneers, and smile makeovers, especially those who value quality, comfort, and a more personalized experience.

I also love connecting with other dentists, specialists, and local professionals who care deeply about their craft and about serving people well. I am always open to thoughtful collaboration, shared ideas, and opportunities to build genuine relationships in the community.

And honestly, one of the most meaningful ways people can support us is by trusting us, sending friends and family our way, and sharing their experience with others. That kind of word-of-mouth support has been huge for us.
