Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky & Eden Thoennes.
Hi Sky & Eden, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We’ve actually known each other since middle school—what feels like a lifetime ago—but we were always just friends. After college we reconnected, and the rest unfolded pretty naturally from there.
Sky grew up in the production world, and Eden’s background is a mix of theater, education, and design, so creativity has always been part of our DNA. About twelve years ago, a friend asked Sky to DJ their wedding. We had an absolute blast, and it opened our eyes to how much fun, and how meaningful, the wedding world could be.
We decided to dip our toes into the Kansas City market to see if we could build something special together… and we never really stopped. What started as a one‑off favor turned into a business we love, a community we’re grateful for, and a chance to create unforgettable moments for couples all over the city.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most small businesses, our road hasn’t always been smooth. We started with passion and creativity, but not much else. No roadmap, no formal business training, and definitely no idea how quickly things could grow.
– Learning the business side on the fly: Contracts, pricing, taxes, workflows… we had to figure it all out while still delivering great events.
– Balancing multiple roles: For years we were the DJs, the coordinators, the designers, the marketers, the customer service team—sometimes all in the same weekend.
– Navigating growth: As demand increased, we had to learn how to scale without losing the personal touch that made people love us in the first place, which definitely does not come easily.
– Life happening in the background: Kids, jobs, moves, and the normal chaos of adulthood meant we were constantly adjusting and reinventing how we worked together.
Every challenge pushed us to get better, tighten our systems, and lean into our strengths. We’ve always shared the same core belief: if we take care of people, the rest will follow. That mindset has carried us through the tough seasons and made the wins even sweeter.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Sky brings the technical magic – audio/DJ, lighting, and the behind‑the‑scenes mastery that makes an event feel seamless. Eden brings the eye for design, organization, and the calm, joyful presence that keeps couples grounded. Together, we create events that feel polished, personal, and genuinely fun.
We’ve made a very intentional choice to stay small. We don’t want to be a high‑volume company where couples feel like a number. We want to know our clients, their families, their stories, and the little details that matter to them.
Honestly, what we are proud of is the legacy we’re building. Our kids get to watch us create something meaningful. Something rooted in service, kindness, and dedication. They see us working hard, supporting each other, and showing up for our clients in a way that feels personal and genuine.
We’re proud that our business reflects our values: connection, creativity, and treating people the way we’d want our own family to be treated. And we’re proud that after more than a decade, we still love what we do and the community we get to be part of.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We’ve never been the “jump without looking” type, but we are big believers in taking thoughtful risks. To us, risk isn’t about being reckless; it’s about being willing to step into something new even when the path isn’t perfectly mapped out.
The biggest risks we’ve taken:
• Starting a business with no formal roadmap: We had the passion and the skill, but we were learning the business side as we went. It was a leap of faith that required trust in each other and a lot of late‑night problem‑solving.
• Choosing to stay intentionally small: In an industry where “bigger” is often seen as “better,” deciding to remain “boutique” was a risk. We turned down opportunities to scale quickly because we wanted to protect the quality of our work and the relationships we build with clients.
• Balancing business with family life: Every season of growth has required us to reevaluate how we work so we can still be present for our kids. Sometimes the risk is saying “no” to more events so we can say “yes” to the life we want at home.
Every risk we’ve taken has brought us closer to the business we’re proud of today. A business that reflects who we are, not just what we do. We get to model for our kids what it looks like to build something with integrity, creativity, and teamwork. And we get to serve couples in a way that feels personal, grounded, and genuinely joyful.
