Hidden Gems: Meet Sarabeth De Cunha of Fruitful Vine Midwifery KC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarabeth De Cunha.

Hi Sarabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I saw my first live birth in 2015 in a small village clinic in Indonesia. Witnessing the beautiful design for childbirth enthralled me, and I knew I wanted to work with women in some capacity one day. After attending births as a doula starting in 2019, I began my formal midwifery training in 2021. I moved back to my home state of Montana to attend a hands-on midwifery train program before retiring to Kansas City where I apprenticed under 2 midwives here before sitting for my NARM exam.
Supporting families through pregnancy and birth brings me immense joy. I’m dedicated to creating a safe, empowering environment where both moms and babies can flourish and have a beautiful start to the next chapter of their journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are a lot of ups and downs in the midwifery world. The journey to becoming a midwife was challenging. There are a number of requirements needed to be able to sit for the NARM exam. Beyond that the exam it self takes a lot of discipline to prepare for. Personally I had to take the exam more than once before receiving a passing score and becoming a CPM.

It doesn’t end there though, we experience some really high highs and at times some really low lows. There are days when But I am always encouraged and reminded when I remember the hard work it took to get here was worth it, that I believe God has be here in this season working with women fro a reason and I always know there is such a good connection with midwives here in KC, one of them is just a phone call away and is always willing to lend a listening ear.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fruitful Vine Midwifery KC?
A CPM is a knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the Midwives Model of Care. The CPM is the only kind of midwifery credential which requires knowledge and experience in out-of-hospital settings. CPMs usually work in peoples homes or birth center type practices throughout the US, Canada and Mexico.

Certified Professional Midwives provide continuous care for women throughout the childbearing cycle. Fruitful Vine Midwifery KC typically takes 2-3 mama’s due each month, allowing for more personalized and comprehensive care than typical obstetrical practices.

The guiding principles of the practice of CPMs are to work with women to promote a healthy pregnancy, and provide education to help her make informed decisions about her own care. In partnership with their clients, CPMs carefully monitor the progress of the pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum period and recommend appropriate management if complications arise, collaborating with other healthcare providers when necessary.

We offer safe, satisfying birth, in the comfort of home.
