Today we’d like to introduce you to Justyce Dority.
Hi Justyce, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had an eye for photography. Even in high school, I took a photography class and realized how much I loved capturing moments. After graduation, I went to college, though not for photography. Life took some unexpected turns, and I ended up leaving college and moving north of Kansas City.
That move changed everything. I started working for a company that did school pictures, and that job helped me grow both technically and professionally. I learned how to work with all kinds of people, shoot efficiently, and deliver quality consistently.
Working there is what truly pushed me to start my own photography business. It gave me the confidence, experience, and motivation I needed. Since then, I’ve built my own business and found success doing what I love. Photography has always been part of me and now it’s my career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. On the outside, people see the photos and the success—but they don’t always see the challenges behind it. One of the biggest struggles was trying to balance real life while chasing my passion. I left college due to personal reasons, had to start over in a place I haven’t been in since I was a young girl.
Starting a business on top of that wasn’t easy. I had to figure everything out on my own pricing, equipment, editing, branding, marketing, taxes while also working for another company. There were times I doubted myself or felt overwhelmed, but I kept going because I knew photography was what I was meant to do.
Another challenge was confidence. It took time for me to believe in my own work and charge what I was worth. But every obstacle pushed me to grow, and overcoming those struggles made me stronger and more determined.
The road hasn’t been perfect, but every step has led me to where I am now and I’m proud of that journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Justyce Dority Photography is my portrait photography business, with a growing focus on senior photography. I create images that are polished and intentional while still feeling natural and true to each person. I guide clients through posing so they feel confident and comfortable, rather than stiff or awkward. Along with seniors, I also photograph families and pets, because some of the most meaningful moments come from the people and animals we love most.
I specialize in working with seniors who want photos that truly reflect who they are at this stage of their life. Every session is relaxed and personalized, with clear direction and posing so clients never feel unsure of what to do. I focus on highlighting personality, interests, and individuality while still delivering professional, high quality images.
What sets my business apart is the connection I build with my clients and the storytelling behind each session. I take the time to get to know the people I photograph so their images feel authentic and not generic. Brand wise, I am most proud of my soft, approachable style and the experience I create that helps clients feel confident and seen in front of the camera.
I want readers to know that my brand is about more than just taking photos. It is about capturing moments that matter, celebrating milestones, and providing a professional yet personal experience from start to finish.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would not be where I am without the support of the people around me. My clients deserve a huge amount of credit for trusting me with their important moments and for supporting my business through referrals, kind words, and continued loyalty. Their encouragement and belief in my work have played a major role in helping my business grow.
I have also been fortunate to have mentors and fellow photographers who have shared guidance, advice, and honest feedback along the way. Their willingness to share knowledge and experience has helped me improve my skills, grow my confidence, and better understand the business side of photography.
My family, friends, and supporters have been constant cheerleaders, encouraging me to keep going even when things felt challenging. Whether it was spreading the word, showing up to sessions, or simply believing in my vision, their support has been invaluable and continues to push me forward.
