Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Mcbain.
Casey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My husband and I are transplants to Kansas City, originally from Northern California. We left CA during the pandemic in search for a place that was more affordable and had a slower pace of life. We spent 1.5 years traveling the country in an RV, came to Kansas City to visit my brother, and never left. Our laundromat has been in its location since the 1960s, and we bought it in Nov 2023. When we arrived in Kansas City, we were looking for a small business to buy, and get me out of corporate. I previously worked in healthcare operations. I am disabled and have had health issues in the past, so owning our own business allows me to manage my own schedule and still work. When we bought the laundromat originally, it had not been touched or improved upon beyond small changes for many years. We immediately made cosmetic changes, and completed a full renovation in March 2025. We have fully replaced our machines to include top of the line touchscreen speed queens, and a convenient card system that allows customers to earn rewards and pay by cash or card, leaving quarters at home. A large part of our business is also our full service wash and fold business. We offer both drop off services and pickup and delivery, allowing customers to never have to worry about laundry again. Their laundry is washed and dried to their specifications, and is returned folded or hung, ready to be put away.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business always has its challenges. We have bootstrapped the business and haven’t taken on investors, so being financially conservative while still making improvements has been a balancing act. We have had water heaters go out and need to be replaced, frozen pipes, power outages, backed up sewers, broken heaters, broken A/C, and staffing difficulties. I am lucky that I haven’t so far had a problem that couldn’t be fixed.
As you know, we’re big fans of Splash Laundry KC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a full service laundromat. We offer self service (customers come in and do their own laundry) and full service wash and fold (we do the laundry for customers). We have worked really hard to make our business a “third place” for our patrons- a place where others meet up, get to know other members of the community, and feel safe and welcome. We are proud that our laundromat has a “cozy” feel rather than sterile and commercial. We are most known for our wash and fold services, where we allow customers to drop off their own laundry, or we also offer free pickup and delivery anywhere in the KC metro. In just over two years of running our business, we have served just under 1000 customers with our wash and fold business, and have processed over 80,000 lbs of laundry. We specialize in finding solutions not only for our residential customers, but we also do laundry for commercial and businesses as well. We serve all sorts of businesses, from salons and med spas to cleaning companies and Airbnbs. This year we also expanded to rug cleaning, wedding dress cleaning and preservation, and car seat cleaning for infants and young children. Our car seat cleaning is a service we think not enough parents know about but could certainly make their lives easier.
What we are most proud of however is our service. We are one of the highest rated laundry services in the metro, and are lucky enough to have collected 300+ reviews in the last two years of owning our business.
One thing that sets us apart is that we will be launching laundry memberships this month. Traditional wash and fold operates on a per pound basis, making the total costs unclear to customers and making it hard for them to reliably budget a laundry service for their home. We will still be offering this, but adding memberships as well. This will allow people who want to have their laundry done on a regular basis to be able to pick a membership tier that best suits them (number of bags of laundry per month), and have a set price for their service with no second guessing. To our knowledge we are the first in the metro to offer this. This is perfect for people of all ages, but also makes a great gift option as well. (This is not yet live but let me know when the article is being published and we will make sure the memberships are live before then)
