Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Freeland.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My husband, Mike, had gone to Harrisonville, MO for an estate sale. While there they had told them there were several buildings on the historic square for sale. He went over to take a look at them and found the building that is now the Davis Event Space. Having been a wedding photographer for 20+ years, he knew it would make a great wedding venue. We got together with Scott, another photographer, and his wife and started Beck Event Space in 2017. Scott and I ran the event space together. At the beginning of 2024 we took over sole ownership and changed the name to Davis Event Space in honor of the Davis Brothers Garage in which the space was originally built for in 1915. Since then I have been running the business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I do not think there is such a thing as a smooth road when owning and running your own business. There are daily challenges and adventures. But having a couple tell you that their wedding day was perfect or better than they could have imagined, makes it all worth it.
We’ve been impressed with Davis Event Space, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are primarily a wedding venue, but have also hosted quinceañeras, corporate events, and high school proms and serve the KC Metro area. Our renovations were done with weddings in mind. We have an open catering, DJ, and florist policy so you may bring in your favorites. We offer hosted and cash bar options. Your floor plan is set and ready when you arrive and we take care of the end of night clean up! You may also use any decor we have at no additional cost.
The building was originally built as a mechanic garage and had a lift to the second floor. Part of the gears for the lift were still in the building when we purchased it and we were able to use those items to have a cake table, guest table, and gift table made from them. Having those tables help keep the history of the building alive.
Our goal is to have the best customer service around. I have a FANTASTIC staff (some of which are past brides) and know they will go above and beyond for our couples. I also love being there to watch the couples, along with their family and friends, enjoy the day. I feel very blessed to be able to see those special memories being made.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I liked to be organized, although my organization was more like controlled chaos at times, lol. I liked the idea of working for myself and thought I would want to own my own business, but never knew what kind. I worked several customer service jobs early on and really enjoyed them due to the interactions I had with customers. I especially liked getting to know and talking with the repeat customers.
