Inspiring Conversations with Avremi Baron of The Friendship Circle of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avremi Baron.

Hi Avremi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I had a close friend who had a cousin with Down syndrome. Going to camp as staff for the first time, my friend asked me if we could have his cousin join us as counselors. Initially I was hesitant, but agreed. From then on Shmuly was one of the boys, he was part of our friends group, we did everything together, and until this day is a source of so much laughter, love, and positivity.

For Shmuly he had us, but it bothered me how many individuals with disabilities are not included. They live a life of isolation and loneliness because they are different than their peers and therefore are misunderstood and are not given a chance to contribute to society in a meaningful way.

I started the friendship circle of Kansas City to even the playing field for individuals with disabilities. We create meaningful friendships between people with and without disabilities through over the top fun that brings out everyones unique abilities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Thank G-D right when we started we were overwhelmed with interest. Our only obstacle to growth at this point is funding. We have so many incredibly generous partners, but as we are a non profit, keeping up with the fundraising is a daily grind.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Friendship Circle of Kansas City?
We create friendships between people with and without disabilities through over the top fun that fosters everyones unique abilities. Practically we have 4 ongoing programs.

Sunday Circle (Ages 3–10) – A playful, structured program focused on sensory play, movement, music, and connection for young children and their families

Teen Scene (Ages 11–17) – A social program designed for teens to build confidence, friendships, and independence through games, activities, and group experiences

Young Adult Club (Ages 18+) – A community for adults with disabilities to connect socially, build friendships, and enjoy meaningful experiences together.

Friends at home- We pair up trained teenage volunteer “buddies” and children with disabilities for weekly visits in the comfort of their own homes.

By all programs individuals with and without disabilities are paired up one on one to bond and create meaningful friendships.

I think what sets us apart is our approach to these friendships. They are genuine friendships that outlast the specific programs. Both parties are gaining tremendously and are invested in the relationship. As well, our programs are well thought through and are over the top!

How do you define success?
Success would be an inclusive Kansas City, when everyone is given a fair chance to be a part of what’s going on, we don’t need to exist.
