Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie Kidd.
Hi MacKenzie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Photography is a beautiful form of storytelling. For years, it was just for me. My own way to keep the people and places I love most from fading into the background of a memory. When my husband and I moved our lives from Oklahoma to Kansas City, I decided to take a chance on a dream my younger self had and chose to stop keeping the lens to myself. I wanted to see if I could capture the essence of other people’s lives in all their messy and beautiful parts. So now, I’ve started MacKenzie Kidd Photography.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not even close, but anything worth doing usually involves a bit of a struggle. I moved to a city where I knew absolutely no one. I went from having a community to being a new face. I’ve had to find a tribe here, and I was lucky enough to find a mentor in Lauren of Lauren G Photography. I also have the absolute pleasure of working with KC Kids Photo, which keeps me sharp and has helped me learn the lay of the KC Metro. Between school portraits, Lauren’s guidance during wedding shoots, and my circle back home who keep me traveling and documenting their own lives, the road is starting to level out. I’m finding my footing here, but there’s still a ways to go.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m not one to discuss what separates me from another photographer. I have seen other photographers work around this city and they all offer wonderful services that anyone would be happy to use. My niche just happened to be a bit more accidental. In the beginning, my small circle of friends acted as my test subjects, but I quickly found myself looking beyond the posed stuff. I started grabbing shots when they weren’t looking and catching them in their actual element. So, we leaned into the mundane: the ritual of making coffee, the quiet of the front porch, the teasing between spouses. That’s where the truth lives. I’ve built my business on that duality: the high-energy intimacy of a human portrait and the cold, serene beauty of a landscape. Whether it’s a new milestone or a forgotten dark patch of earth at midnight, I’m just looking for the shot that feels real.
How do you think about happiness?
At the risk of sounding cliche, it’s my family; my husband, Austin, and our three-year-old, Rainier. My boys mean everything to me. They are my foundation. Outside of my boys, my friends are paramount to my happiness. The sisterhood of women who have my back and have seen it all. The ones who stay for the laughter and don’t shy away from the tears. Then, there are the small things that bring me happiness. A wonderful cup of coffee in the morning or a delicious glass of wine at the end of the day. Getting lost in the world of a fantastic book. The thrill of exploring a new area. Crafting something from nothing. Putting my hands in the soil of my garden.
