Conversations with Erum Muzaffar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erum Muzaffar.

Hi Erum, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Erum, and I’m a henna artist from Pakistan. Henna has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, it was everywhere, on Eid, at weddings, and on all happy occasions. It’s a tradition we grow up with, not just something for brides.
I started doing henna as a teenager, first on myself and then on friends and cousins, simply because I loved it. After I got married, I moved to Kansas in 2000. Where I made friends who saw my work and  encouraged me to start offering it professionally, Especially since there were very few henna artists in the area at the time. What started within just my community grew naturally through word of mouth. Today, I offer bridal henna, birthday parties for all ages, corporate events, fairs, and private appointments. Henna is more than an art, for me it’s a way to stay connected to my roots and sharing my tradition with others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not too much struggles, it’s just sometimes got little hard to manage with kids but I manage it nicely.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love Henna. it’s not just an art it’s a therapy, it’s a best way to relax myself. I enjoy doing henna on kids which make them surprise, happy and love the smile they give me after get their favorite designs filled colors and glitter. I do use sometimes glitter and colors if they want to and that’s make me different from others.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would love to grow henna industry, possibly start offering henna classes for all levels so whoever love henna and don’t know the art they also can learn and enjoy as much I do.
