Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger King.
Hi Roger, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My father was carpenter and my mom a bus driver. I have been working since I was 4-5 years old with my dad on side jobs. I quit high school at 16 and started working full-time at various jobs. My first job was in maintenance at Jellystone Park in St Louis, I worked at Taco Bell, WalMart, and as a cook at Ponderosa Steakhouse. When I was 21 I landed a job as a shower installer at a bath remodel company. I started at the bottom and I did 1 complete shower installation per day, 6 days a week for 7 years. I was promoted to the in-home sales consultant role to help design and sell showers. I worked in that role for 1 year when I was promoted to the General Manager position and my wife, 2 kids, and I relocated to Pensacola, FL. While there I also operated the company’s Tallahassee location. After 18 months of running both locations simultaneously we relocated with that company to Kansas City to takeover the location here. After a few years as GM I resigned to pursue a better work/life balance and follow a new dream. I wanted to create a better experience for homeowners looking for high quality affordable bathroom solutions and for me personally to have more time with my family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
NEVER a smooth road when you start. When I started we didn’t have anything, no savings, no tools, no extra vehicles, not even an income. I resigned from my job with nothing to get started but a plan. I used my personal credit card to purchase what we needed and pay for startup costs. We needed to get started right away because I was always the sole provider with my wife being a stay at home mom. I could not get a business loan and we had hurdles to overcome by starting from scratch, no investors either.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Shower Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a small family owned bathroom remodeling company. We do not use sub-contractors, only actual employees, we provide many material options in-house as I am a dealer for 12 different manufacturers whereas most other companies only offer 1 option. We only do bathrooms! This is intentional, we want to be the best, day in and day out. You wont see our people working on windows, roofing, decks, or anything else, our people are like surgeons. We focus on attracting and retaining high quality talent and offer excellent pay and benefits. Our goal is to offer the highest quality materials installed by the highest quality talent at affordable prices to provide excellent value. I wanted to also provide a great work environment and part of that is we are closed on weekends. Nobody works weekends. We are a group of people who really care about our customers just as much as we care about each other and our families.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was hanging out my with my grandpa. He had me mowing grass on the riding mower when I was 7 years old and taught me a lot about life and what it meant to be a great man.
