Rising Stars: Meet Patchara Hompan of Lee’s Summit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patchara Hompan.

Hi Patchara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came to the United States from Thailand 30 years ago. Since then, I have worked in the restaurant industry, mostly as a part-time server. Even though serving was my job, my true passion has always been food and taking care of people.

I love bringing food to people and seeing them enjoy it. Talking with guests and watching them enjoy my food makes me very happy. I believe this comes from my culture. In Thai culture, hospitality is very important. When the visiting come to visit you the first bring water without being asked, and one of the first questions we ask is, “Did you eat? Are you hungry?” This is how we show care and kindness to friends and guests.

For many years, I tried to open my own restaurant, but something always got in the way and the timing was never right. I did not give up. Eventually, my partner, Noah, asked me to join him, and that opportunity changed everything. I am very happy that I decided to move forward with him.

Today, owning a restaurant allows me to share my culture, my food, and my love for hospitality with others. My journey took time, patience, and hard work, and every step helped bring me to where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Like many immigrants, I faced language barriers, long hours, and many years of hard work in the restaurant industry. I worked part-time for a long time while holding on to my dream of owning a restaurant.

There were many moments when I tried and failed because of timing, money, or unexpected challenges. It was discouraging at times, but my passion for food and serving people kept me going. Those struggles taught me patience, resilience, and appreciation for where I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have worked at a community college for over 18 years as a Student Services Specialist in the Financial Aid office. My work focuses on helping students understand the financial aid process, guiding them through applications, deadlines, and requirements, and making sure they have the support they need to continue their education.

I specialize in working closely with students one-on-one, especially those who may feel overwhelmed, unsure, or discouraged by the financial aid system. I am known for my patience, clear communication, and dedication to helping students find solutions so they can stay enrolled and succeed.

What I am most proud of is being able to make a real difference in students’ lives. Many students come from challenging backgrounds, and helping them access financial aid often means helping them achieve their educational and career goals.

What sets me apart is my long-term commitment, consistency, and genuine care for students. After 18 years, I have built strong relationships and trust within the community, and I take pride in being someone students can rely on for guidance and support.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is helping people and seeing the positive impact of my work. Whether it is helping students continue their education or serving guests good food, knowing that I make someone’s day a little easier or better brings me true joy.

I am happy when I see people feel supported, welcomed, and cared for. Helping others succeed and feel valued gives my work meaning, and that is why it makes me happy.
