Life & Work with Keith McDowell of Fulton Missouri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith McDowell.

Hi Keith , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, I’m Keith the owner and operator of Mid-Mo Carpet Cleaning, located in Fulton Missouri. My story falls in the category of serendipity.
I was a stay-at-home dad for over 5 years taking care of our two children and building our forever home. My wife calls me a Jack of all trades since I have worked in several different hands-on trade industries. Flooring being the longest starting in high school.
We knew without a doubt when our kids were old enough, we wanted to start our own business so our hours could be flexible. We homeschool our kids and live on a small hobby farm. Don’t get me started on chicken math, ha!
Balance is a big deal in our life and having both parents able to work and both able homeschool was a must for our balance.
A mutual friend of my wife’s was selling his carpet cleaning business, and I immediately knew it was the right fit for me; it also happened to be the perfect timing, and we jumped into my lifelong dream.
I have always wanted to run my own business, it was scary and difficult, but we made the choice within days we knew it was the right call. I absolutely love all aspects of my work. The customer service side, manual labor and mechanics of working on the vehicles all adds up to feeling empowered and motivated. Which is the best feeling going to work.
Our goal is to provide personalized and detailed work on everything we touch, floors, rugs, upholstery or beds.
I want to be the guy you can count on to always do an excellent job and be fair with prices.
Communication is key in life and business so no hidden fees or surprises.
We want to stand out for our customer service and transparency. In a nutshell we are trying to bring back morals, quality and balance into the over paced, number game that many corporate companies have these days.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our biggest struggle was balancing our schedules with childcare. We always want one parent home with our children so cutting back my wife’s hours meant a pay cut and all the stress that comes with finances trying to get a business off the ground.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are in the carpet cleaning business but that also entails more than just typical carpet. We also do tile, rugs, upholstery like chairs and sofas. Emergency water extractions also set us apart. If you call at 1am due to a burst pipe, we will be on it.
We are most proud of our customer service. We try to go above and beyond to make sure ours are happy and always informed.
Communication through texts, email or calls, on top of honesty is always a winner.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
When I was teen (11-14yo), I started a small business breeding and selling pigs, llamas and various chickens/ birds. I really wanted to be a veterinarian and help animals. My parents moved and I had to sell my business, but ever since then I knew running my own business was the right fit for me.
