Check Out Brittany, Ashley Margolies, Held’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany, Ashley Margolies, Held.

Hi Brittany, Ashley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We are a twin sister team! We went to art school at KU where we got our BFA in Visual Arts and Design. We continued on to get a Master’s degree at UMKC in Education: Curriculum and Instruction.

We have always loved children and when we were growing up, we worked at various preschools. Art and design has always been a passion for both of us, so we dreamt up the idea to open up a small mom and pop preschool that focuses on the arts. We believe there is an art to everything.

We opened Rhyme and Reason Preschool of the Arts shortly after we had our “Twedding” (twin wedding) or double wedding in 2015- yes, we got married on the same day and our husbands are best friends! (We also bought houses across the street from each other).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been easy.
At the beginning we hustled to get the word out about our program. We would walk up to people who had children, whether it be at the library or a park, to pass out flyers about R&R. We also volunteered at the Waldo Farmers Market where we had a children’s booth with fun activities and information about the preschool.

After that first year of enrollment, it was pretty much smooth sailing as we have not had to advertise since then. It’s really just word of mouth now.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are known for our art based preschool. We create our very own curriculum where we incorporate the fundamentals into our weekly themes. Some examples of our themes of the week are; Ancient Egypt, Bees/Bee keepers, Solar System, etc.

We also bring the community to our preschool as special guests. The weekly themes are cohesive with our special guest visitors. For example, if we are learning about bees we would invite a bee keeper. If we are learning about heath and wellness, we would invite a doctor or a nurse as a special
Guest.

What sets us apart from other preschools in KC is our small student to teacher ratio, our creative art based curriculum, our close-knit preschool family environment, and our genuine love for children to learn and be competent and confident! Our students are more than ready to enter kindergarten once they have graduated from our program.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
We define success in the quality of our school and not quantity of children.
