Today we’d like to introduce you to Teddy Van Gough.
Hi Teddy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story didn’t begin with a clear plan—it began with a need to express what I didn’t yet have words for. Early on, creativity was less about career and more about survival. I was searching for identity, stability, and a sense of worth during seasons where life felt uncertain and fragmented. Picking up a camera became a way to make sense of the world and, eventually, myself.
The path here wasn’t linear. There were years marked by financial struggle, broken confidence, and moments where I questioned whether I was truly meant to build something of my own. I’ve experienced loss, displacement, and periods of deep self-doubt that forced me to confront who I was when everything familiar was stripped away. In those moments, storytelling became my anchor. It gave me a voice when I felt unheard and direction when the future felt unclear.
Over time, what started as personal expression evolved into purpose. Detroit Creative Studios grew out of a desire to create work that felt honest—stories that reflected resilience, complexity, and humanity. I became less interested in chasing visibility and more focused on building something intentional, rooted in process, discipline, and meaning.
Today, I stand in a place of clarity rather than arrival. The studio represents growth, healing, and consistency more than success alone. Every project carries the lessons of the journey—the patience earned through struggle, the empathy shaped by hardship, and the belief that our stories matter most when they’re told truthfully. I’m still building, still learning, but now I do so with conviction, purpose, and a deep respect for the path that brought me here.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
t hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Detroit Creative Studios was born in a season where I was learning how to stand again—financially, emotionally, and creatively. There were years where survival came before vision, where I was trying to hold onto belief while everything around me felt unstable. Building this studio wasn’t happening in isolation; it was happening while I was navigating loss, broken confidence, and moments of feeling unseen or unsupported.
There were nights I questioned my worth, not just as a creative, but as a man. Times where I wondered if the stories I wanted to tell mattered enough to justify the sacrifice. Progress was slow. Resources were limited. And the silence—when work didn’t come, when momentum stalled—was loud.
What kept me moving was a quiet refusal to give up on who I knew I could become. Storytelling became my anchor. Creating wasn’t just work—it was how I processed pain, reclaimed my voice, and reminded myself that my experiences had meaning. The obstacles forced me to slow down, to build with intention instead of desperation, and to choose integrity even when shortcuts were tempting.
Those struggles didn’t weaken the foundation—they became it. Detroit Creative Studios exists because of those moments, not in spite of them. Every frame, every story, every collaboration carries that history. The challenges taught me that resilience isn’t loud—it’s consistent. And that building something honest is far more powerful than building something fast.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Detroit creative Studios?
Detroit Creative Studios is a multidisciplinary visual production studio rooted in storytelling, culture, and intention. We specialize in cinematic photography and video for brands, creatives, and organizations that want more than content—they want meaning. Our work spans fashion editorials, brand documentaries, commercial campaigns, and live events, all crafted with a film-first mindset and a deep respect for narrative.
What sets us apart is our ability to merge high-end visuals with emotional truth. We don’t chase trends or quick virality; we focus on creating work that feels timeless, human, and honest. Every project begins with understanding the why behind the brand or individual, allowing us to translate identity, purpose, and presence into compelling visuals.
Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is building a studio that serves as both a creative home and a platform—one that uplifts emerging voices, mentors young creatives, and represents Detroit with integrity and excellence. Detroit Creative Studios isn’t just about what we produce, but how and why we produce it: with care, discipline, and a belief that powerful stories can shape confidence, culture, and connection.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
