Conversations with Heather Harper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Harper.

Hi Heather, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a child I loved fashion and wanted to learn to create all those beautiful garments that I saw on the runway. As I got older, I taught myself to sew and created things for myself and my family. I also opened my own business in 2008 and sold my creations on Etsy. After obtaining my degree in Fashion Design and Technology in 2019, I opened my own alteration shop. I focus on altering garments for a wide range of body times and all genders and I specialize in bridal, formal wear, prom, suits, & everyday wear.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our journey has been one of steady evolution. I initially launched the business from my home, but as we navigated the natural growing pains of a startup, we transitioned into our first small storefront and eventually expanded into our current, larger facility to meet increasing demand. With each move, our needs changed. I had to quickly fill in the gaps in my industry knowledge, specifically focusing on identifying and sourcing the essential machinery needed to transition from a small-scale operation to a mid-scale alteration shop.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specializing in bridal and formal wear and work with non-average body types to be more inclusive with sizing and personal expression. I enjoy blending heirloom craftsmanship with modern silhouettes to create that one of a kind garmet.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
While I haven’t yet connected with a local mentor in my field, I’ve been able to bridge that gap by staying active in online forums and attending virtual workshops.
