Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyllie Farrow.
Hi Kyllie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I first started volunteering at the Humane Society in 2020 through a club called Northwest Animal Advocates. This club required that you have a certain amount of volunteer hours at the Humane Society for you to remain a member. After a few months of volunteering with this program, I applied for a position with the Humane Society and got the job. I started at the Humane Society about 5 years ago as a kennel tech, cleaning kennels, walking dogs, hanging out with cats, doing daily medication, and working front desk getting animals adopted/ rehomed. In August of 2025 I was promoted to a higher position in which I was basically a manager assistant. I did some of the intake/ outtake process, I answered staff questions about medical things, made some decisions on vet calls, I helped calculate totals, file files, most of the office work. In September of 2025, I became the interim manager until I applied for the management position and took over in November of 2025.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This job has never been smooth. We deal with so many people that do not care for their animals. Unfair decisions. Neglect cases. All sorts of things that are not fun. We go through staff like crazy because we are a nonprofit and we are unable to afford to hire employees full time and we are unable to give raises to employees that deserve it. There is no progress you can make in this field. The Humane Society has always had a tap out at max amount of pay and it does not change no matter how long you are here. I have been through a couple assistant managers that tried to fight for a raise and got nowhere. On top of that, we do not have access to benefits and that is how we lost our previous manager. Getting up to the position that I am in now was not easy, I had to work my butt off to get here. It is still not an easy road as I have some big shoes to fill and I am still getting into the routine of things.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the manager at the New Nodaway Humane Society and what sets me apart from the others is the love and passion I have for my staff and the animals at my facility. I am trying to change some things to better our shelter and to help the animals get more publicity and love from our community. I would like to show off our foster program and let the community know that it does not cost them a single penny to foster an animal from the Humane Society and the impact it can have on any of these animals. I also want to start having staff bonding opportunities, we have done a couple game nights and they have been amazing memories for staff to look back on. Something I am proud of in my time being here is the two programs I started that are still running to this day. First being the Secret Santa program, giving every shelter animal a Christmas present, making it to where the shelter does not have to pay a penny for goody bags and gifts sent home with our adoptable pets. Second being the sleepover program, this makes it to where anyone can come to our facility and take a dog or cat home for a night just to spoil them and get them away from the stress of the shelter.
