Hidden Gems: Meet Avery Poindexter of Cannon Counseling and Wellness LLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Poindexter.

Hi Avery, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I originally thought I wanted to be a doctor or a physician assistant, but as I studied psychology and behavioral science, I became fascinated with the human side of science and health. That interest deepened when I was trained as an advocate for sexual assault survivors during my time as an undergraduate student. Helping people navigate incredibly difficult experiences showed me that this is not only something I’m good at, but also something I can see myself enjoying long-term.

From there, I worked as an academic advisor at the University of Kansas, supporting students through course planning, life transitions, and the pressures of figuring out the future. I loved supporting their academic pursuits, but I realized I was most drawn to the emotional and relational side of that work, including the anxiety, self-doubt, and family dynamics that often come along with major life decisions.

That led me to become a therapist, where I now work with adolescents and adults on anxiety, OCD, and life transitions. At the core of all my work is helping people feel understood, empowered, and capable of making choices that truly reflect who they are.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been some bumps along the way! I live with a chronic health condition, and trying to keep up with school, work, and seeing clients could get really overwhelming at times. The days when I wasn’t feeling well but still had to show up were some of the hardest, but they also showed me how resilient I can be. Those experiences have given me a lot of empathy for clients who are juggling multiple demands or dealing with health challenges of their own, and they’ve shaped the way I show up for my clients who are navigating similar difficulties.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My practice supports adolescents, young adults, and their families through anxiety, OCD, life transitions, and chronic illness. I also work with LGBTQ clients and take pride in creating a safe, affirming space where they can explore their identity and feel fully seen.

What sets my practice apart is the focus on authentic connection. I build strong rapport, bring humor into sessions, and show up as a real person, which sometimes looks like talking about the newest TV shows or Taylor Swift. Therapy with me is both compassionate and relatable, helping clients build resilience, confidence, and self-trust while feeling understood and supported.

At the heart of my work is helping people thrive, even through life’s challenges, in a space that is approachable, affirming, and sometimes even fun.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have mentors, supporters, and peers who helped me discover my professional identity and grow into the therapist I am today. My Counseling Psychology professors at the University of Kansas were amazing. They challenged me to think critically, pushed me to stretch beyond my comfort zone, and created a space where I could explore different approaches to counseling while finding my own voice. They provided guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback that shaped both my clinical skills and my confidence.

I also owe a lot to my friends and classmates from my graduate program. They were not only a support system through the intense coursework and training, but also a sounding board for ideas, a space to practice skills, and cheerleaders celebrating each milestone. Having a cohort of peers who were equally passionate about helping others made the learning process collaborative and truly enjoyable.

Beyond professors and peers, I am grateful for the clients I’ve worked with along the way. Their trust and vulnerability pushed me to grow as a clinician, deepened my empathy, and continually reminded me why this work matters. Together, these mentors, peers, and clients helped me shape the values, style, and mission of my practice.
