We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Kathryn Miller. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Kathryn, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Understanding themselves. The person you spend the most time with, the person you “should” know better than anyone else. Is YOU. But do you *really* understand yourself? And how does a person…get to know themselves? Well, I’m not sure what that looks like for you, but the good news is, only YOU can answer that for YOU! I actually schedule, time for myself to meditate or read. I know what seems a little “forced” but it’s the only way I ensure *me* time happens. So, it’s built into my calendar.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi friends! My name is Dr. Kathryn Miller. I earned my veterinary degree from Kansas State in 2010. I currently reside in Cottonwood Falls, KS with my husband and our daughter, I am an active competitor in the National Reining Horse Association and strongly feel that this helps me understand my Equine Performance clients. Recently, I have taken a bit of a step back from practicing, and more actively engaged in the mental well being and health of my profession. Especially DVM’s that have recently entered the profession. I am not sure there has ever been a cause I felt more deeply. I see myself in those young professionals. I see my daughter in those young professionals. And I want to help. Veterinary medicine, needs help.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
She who thought the only way to win was to hustle, which led to burnout which led to feeling my profession had abandon me. DVM’s are, by nature, Type A’s, over achievers, the brightest in the room. I lived it. I thought I had to. And it DID serve me well. I built two veterinary practices in Kansas and a plethora of relationships I very much value. But I also know it cost me some things as well. It cost me hobbies, and relationships. I don’t want to show my daughter the only way to succeed is hustling. There is a difference between “husting to exhaustion” and “hustling for a cause you believe in.” Now, to demonstrate it is not always as easy.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! When I was deep in the trenches of practicing veterinary medicine. I distinctly remember talking to my business coach and telling her. “I give. Burn it to the ground.” That is a feeling that I bet many practicing DVM’s and owners have had. It was at that point, that we started to build a structure within my businesses that allowed for delineation of duties. A structure for growth. A structure for sanity. Thank goodness I had someone to help me or I don’t think I would’ve made it. Which has also bore a new passion, helping other young DVM’s.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Spirit > Body > Mind. But I, and many others often act as Mind > Body > Spirit. It’s something I continually work on and I believe holds infinite value.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I without a doubt, know a peace and true happiness, when I rock my daughter to bed. In a room filled with nothing but love, wonder and potential. Holding a human that my body made, and knowing she, right now, knows no limits. It is a feeling of true peace but also gratitude. It is a feeling of infinite possibilities. And I love it.
