We recently had the chance to connect with Brooke Bruce and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day usually starts off juggling morning chaos: getting Carter ready for school, navigating his high-energy mornings, and pottying the dogs. Once I drop him off, my attention shifts to the farm. I open up and check on the chickens…I give them feed, refresh their water, collect any early eggs, and make sure the roosters are behaving.
Our dogs follow me around waiting for breakfast and tummy rubs. They know the routine and definitely know when I’m a few minutes late feeding them.
From there, I eat breakfast while answering messages about puppies, responding to inquiries, keeping up with customers, handling website questions, and managing whatever the business needs that day. Some days I’m drafting waitlist emails; other days I’m scheduling farm visits or puppy pickups.
I try to squeeze a few household tasks in between everything… cleaning, cooking, throwing in laundry, and keeping the house somewhat together. Some days I’m restocking meat, picking up feed, or running errands, and that just gets woven into the day too.
In the afternoons, I head back to the farm to check on the cows. I always check their water and move them to a new pasture. During winter, we unroll hay daily. Once that’s done, the rest of the afternoon and evening revolves around Carter… school pickup, snacks, homework, and either sports or karate practice.
Evenings are a mix of family time, farm odds and ends, and trying to keep everyone fed and settled. The chickens get shut in safely at dusk, the dogs get their attention and dinner, and I finish up any leftover messages or business tasks before bed.
Days can be long, ever-changing, messy, busy, unpredictable, and a lot of work… but they’re ours. And we love it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The Bruce Farm specializes in breeding Goldendoodle puppies and raising high quality beef delivered locally to your door. We raise our grass fed, grass finished beef on our farms in Kingsville, MO and Chilhowee, MO (southeast of Kansas City). We are committed to regenerating the land, giving our animals the best life possible, and sharing our high quality meats by conveniently delivering them to your door. We take pride in operating our farm and business with our animals and our customers as our top priority.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, my parents taught me the most about work. They both worked hard and I learned early on that nothing comes without effort and hard work. You have to put in the work to get anywhere in life.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You’re capable of anything you put your mind to. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, to pivot or chase what you really want. You don’t have to have all the answers right now… you’re allowed to grow.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my husbands character. He consistently chooses what’s right, even when it’s not the easiest path. He stays calm, faces challenges head-on, and is my rock when I need it most. I admire him not for any power he has, but for the kind of person he is.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Farming for sure. A lot of what I’m doing right now won’t show a return for years. Things like improving soil, buildling better pastures, growing the herd and investing in equipment or infrastructure all take time. Farming is a long game… what you do today pays off years down the road. Non of it happens overnight. It takes patience and consistency but we believe the long-term reward is worth it.
