We recently had the chance to connect with Samuel Landu and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Samuel, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I feel as an artist and designer only I know the trajectory of my career. I’m very proud of the ideas and concepts I grow with in my mood board I would say residing in my head.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sam Simons, or Samuel Landu. I named myself after my favorite designer; Raf Simons. I would say my inclusiveness with history is what makes my brand; “Contrast” pop out. It is high fashion and Avante-guarde streetwear.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Former Glo Gang producer and current platinum’ producer 12 Hunna taught me how to work. He doesn’t talk much, or go into details. He just does it. I was his assistant in my late teens.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. I almost gave up recently, but my lense was dirtied. Meaning, I didn’t have an honest outlook on that decision. I did my first runway show this year, but I should have already done it on a larger stage. I couldn’t really explain to my audience, and still have to keep some to myself. It helped me change my outlook. I really want to be a designer so I could never give up. I think it’s important to experience the feeling though. So you know.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
The information you hold may put you at higher status and value, but humans still have to CHOOSE you. Money and intellect isn’t everything. A lot of people have all that and are terrible humans. Then they’re confused when people don’t choose them.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think what will be misunderstood about my legacy is that I wanted to do things alone. The human mind is complex and a lot of variables stem from that. I always wanted genuine people to work with or be around.
