Hidden Gems: Meet Rick Boxx of Unconventional Business Network

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Boxx.

Hi Rick, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2001, hundreds of Christian business leaders from around the U.S. were seeking counsel from my consulting practice about the business challenges they were having. They desired to guide their business from a Biblical approach but needed answers and direction. We decided at that time that forming a nonprofit to support these business leaders would be beneficial. From that point the ministry grew to include conferences and events to encourage business leaders in their vocational calling; content and resources including our daily radio and email broadcasts called Integrity Moments. In addition, we now produce reading plans on the Bible app with around 500,000 subscribers. We also began business community groups called Forums. These groups now meet monthly from Uganda, Canada, Mexico and across the United States. Our vision is that every business leader would become a Christ-centered catalyst for workplace transformation. Our goal for sometime has been to equip over one million business leaders with Biblical principles for business by the end of 2027. We recently surpassed 700,000 leaders towards that goal.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a nonprofit funded by generous donors there have certainly been lean times as well as times of plenty, yet God has sustained this ministry for over 23 years. At times there have been personnel challenges as well as cash flow challenges. We have learned, modified and grown accordingly. Our heart has been to persevere to help business leaders know that the Bible is the best business book they will ever find and that its principles are practical and relevant to the marketplace.

As you know, we’re big fans of Unconventional Business Network. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a 501c3 nonprofit ministry focused on helping business leaders to integrate their faith and the Bible into their business practices. We make the Bible practical and relevant for business application to the daily challenges of business. Our members are served by our high quality conferences and events that includes an ongoing presence in Kansas City and Des Moines as well as a national conference called Faith Incorporated. Our events help those leaders who have never considered that God has a plan for their business life to discover a vocational calling. We also provide daily content and resources with practical business stories and a related biblical principle each day. These radio and email stories reach millions in multiple languages and through a daily radio program on 200 stations. Finally, we also know that business leaders need to learn in community with others as well as have the opportunity for accountability to the teaching. We provide those leaders a monthly Forum group with high quality video content and a scalable format. We were pioneers in the modern day faith at work movement which gives us decades of experience in helping Christian business leaders act like Christians in their workplace and beyond. This results in changed lives, transformed workplaces, and impacted communities for Christ.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Every day feels like a risk in a small nonprofit. We try to limit our risks by be prayerfully discerning. Major decisions are grounded in prayer and waiting to move forward when we are confident God has given us a green light. There have been times when we have taken bold risks before having that clarity that brought with them painful mistakes.
