Meet Tunyaluk (Tanya) Batchan of Nipphan Embodied Healing, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tunyaluk (Tanya) Batchan.

Hi Tunyaluk (Tanya), please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey to becoming a marriage and family therapist began while I was an early childhood educator working for the Department of Defense Navy. I became fascinated by the emotional and behavioral changes children exhibit during different transitions at home, such as deployments, separations, fluctuations in parents’ work schedules, and the introduction of new caregivers. This curiosity led me to pursue a degree in marriage and family therapy at Northcentral University (now part of National University), where I concentrated on how family dynamics shape the development of children and adolescents.

During my internship in Texas, under the guidance of an amazing supervisor who explained that object relations and attachment theory profoundly influenced human behavior, with which I strongly agreed. She introduced me to EMDR therapy, which I quickly became familiar with. I experienced quickly how EMDR therapy can effectively address transgenerational trauma and the emotional wounds that can be inherited across generations. This holistic approach also encompasses trauma linked to family dynamics, loss, and challenging experiences in the outside world, including those stemming from wars or accidents.

Throughout my two-and-a-half-year pursuit of licensure, I had numerous rewarding experiences, gained valuable insights from excellent supervisors, and took advantage of many growth opportunities. In an inpatient residential setting, I worked with children and teens who exhibited reactivity due to traumatic relational disconnection, whether from abuse, neglect, or other trauma that shaped their lives. This has proven to be an invaluable clinical experience, and I am thankful for it. My time working with individuals facing relational disconnections has solidified my commitment to EMDR therapy, as I’ve witnessed significant changes in behavior firsthand. Now, after seven years in the field, I take pride in being a licensed marriage and family therapist, with an approved AAMFT fellowship and certification in EMDR therapy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been quite challenging, especially as a military spouse who relocates every few years. I began my program in Hawaii, completed my graduation internship in Texas, and earned all 3,000 of my clinical hours in Missouri. I then received my license in Wisconsin in the middle of PCSing there, as I was moving away from Missouri, and later became fully licensed in Missouri as well.

Throughout this journey, I’ve moved 7 times due to military orders, including stints of 9 months, 1 year, and 2 years, all in accordance with the Army’s needs. Additionally, I faced a significant setback with a major surgery that delayed my graduation.

One of the significant hurdles has been securing an internship site to fulfill graduation requirements and to gather those crucial clinical hours. Finding a location to complete the 3,000 clinical hours and a state- or nationally approved AAMFT supervisor proved particularly daunting. I realized there were only 14 AAMFT-approved supervisors in Missouri, which was concerning since my assignment at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, was limited to just two years. Fortunately, everything eventually fell into place.

One trend N.E.H. strives to achieve is helping our clients integrate traditional healing practices with modern therapies, emphasizing a more holistic approach to health and well-being. As people become more aware of the importance of mental, emotional, and spiritual health alongside physical health, we may witness a broader acceptance and incorporation of these practices into mainstream wellness. Humans are strong, and we want to help bring that inner strength to their awareness.

N.E.H. may be placing greater emphasis on community building in its practices. Workshops, group sessions, peer support for clinicians, supervision to help grow therapists in the field, and retreats could become more popular, fostering a sense of connection and shared healing among participants.

Lastly, as societal awareness regarding mental health continues to rise, we might see increased collaboration between healers and healthcare professionals, leading to a more integrated and supportive approach to wellness. Overall, the future of N.E.H. looks promising, with opportunities to expand accessibility, community, and integration.
