Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Murray.
Hi Brandon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
7 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare bone disease. I was placed on disability and was/am very limited in what I can do. It was Christmas, I was on a budget, so I thought it would be cool and creative to make everyone handmade gifts. After a bit of research, soap seemed different and unique. I gathered the supplies and my passion for soap started. I made a vanilla oak for the men and a lavender shea butter bar for the women. THEY all loved it, it was a hit! After some encouragement, DURTY MURRAY SOAP CO. began. Fast forward 7 years, we now have over 30 different bars to choose from and thousands of bars in stock. All of our recipes are original and made from scratch. Making soap is something I can do, it relaxes me and it gives me a purpose.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. Starting a small business is easy, running a small business can be challenging in different ways. First, finding consumers is the hardest. These days soapmakers are everywhere. I had to find something to set my products apart from all the others. Second, figuring out what the consumer wants. Third, keeping products in stock and keeping up with inventory. Last but not least, sourcing local ingredients, using premium ingredients and all natural ingredients while maintaining a reasonable price point.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Durty Murray Soap Co. is a Soap company that focuses on using premium ingredients to create a quality bar of soap and offer it at an affordable price. We use ingredients like locally sourced beef fat, local honey, locally brewed beer and Missouri sunflower. We make everything in house, package, label and distribute. We offer soaps that are fragrance free and are a healthier alternative to all the heavier synthetic scented soaps and body washes on the market.

My customers, my Durty family, my beautiful and hard working wife! Without word of mouth, there would be no DURTY MURRAY SOAP CO. Without my customers, I wouldn’t have a hobby that was as fulfilling as this one. My wife, she allows me to be creative and gives me the space to do so, she’s supportive and believes in my products as much as I do.
