Hidden Gems: Meet Erica Magruder of Align Body and Birth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Magruder.

Hi Erica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began working as a physical therapist 11 years ago. I worked with many different patient populations trying to find the right fit. I was introduced to pelvic floor physical therapy (PT) as a patient. After my first child I experienced pelvic floor dysfunction and sought healing through working with a pelvic floor PT. As I continued visits as a patient, I felt called to pursue the needed training and continued education to specialize in pelvic floor physical therapy to be able to help women learn more about their bodies and heal their pelvic floors. I was blessed to be given employment opportunities surrounded by other pelvic floor physical therapists and grow my knowledge and skill set. After working in this specialty for nearly 5 years I felt an even greater calling and knew my professional walk would need to change.
I’ve enthusiastically answered the call to homeschool our children and continue serving women by starting my business, Align Body and Birth. God provided me with community, resources, and wisdom to put each piece of this puzzle in place for us to completely change the way our family functions.
Align Body and Birth is a mobile pelvic floor physical therapy business. I provide in-home pelvic floor physical therapy for women experiencing any type of pelvic floor dysfunction. This business has allowed me to meet women where they are and truly serve them. I have been surprised by how wonderful and fitting it is to serve people in their own homes. It elevates the level of care I’m able to provide these women.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle was my own pride. I was in my own way of forward progress. As I grew to know Jesus and learn of his humility and meekness it helped to grow me. My motives and goals have completely changed and that is what has allowed Align Body and Birth to exist. My heart is to serve people. Serve my husband, my children, and my community. As I move forward with this heart of service and keep my priorities in the correct order I’ve been able to live with overwhelming peace.

As you know, we’re big fans of Align Body and Birth. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Align Body and Birth provides in-home pelvic floor physical therapy.
Pelvic floor physical therapy serves any person with pelvic floor dysfunction.
This can present as: urinary incontinence (leakage), urinary urgency, pelvic pain, low back pain, hip pain, abdominal pain, constipation, difficulty holding gas, fecal incontinence (leakage), or pelvic organ prolapse.
I serve women from teenage years to 64 years old in the Kansas City, MO metro.
I provide direct care to women in their homes. This allows me to care well for women. I am able to meet you exactly where you’re at. There’s no need to find child care, leave your home, or find extra time in your schedule. We just need the one hour for me to come to you and begin your journey in healing dysfunction that certainly interferes with your daily life.

People really deserve to know they do not need to live with continued pelvic floor dysfunction. It will not just “get better.” When our bodies present with physical dysfunction they require professional training to rehabilitate.
As a doctor of physical therapy I have training to treat the entire body, and specialized training to treat pelvic floor muscles.

I hope more people are able to receive education about pelvic floor health. I hope people know peeing your pants isn’t normal. Constipation isn’t normal. Pain with sex isn’t normal. Period pain keeping you in bed all day isn’t normal.
There are many pelvic floor physical therapists in the Kansas City area and we’re all here to help you and cheer you on!

I have a heart for working with women during pregnancy and postpartum. Growing and birthing a human via vaginal delivery or c-section is a major life event. Our bodies experience huge transformation during this period of time and deserve specialized care to feel good during pregnancy and heal postpartum. We can improve women’s postpartum recovery by completing pelvic floor physical therapy during pregnancy. Our bodies are beautifully and wonderfully made. Our tissue is able to be retrained when we have the proper guidance and programming.

I offer a free phone 15 minute consultation to any inquiring patient. I want each woman to feel fully informed and ensure we are the right fit for one another. Pelvic floor physical therapy is an intimate and sometimes emotional service. I want women to feel safe and confident before we move forward and schedule our first visit.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
There are several continuing education courses that continue to grow my knowledge in pelvic floor physical therapy.
