Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashton Markt.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, I’m Ashton Markt, an artist/creative entrepreneur. I graduated magna cum laude from Northwest Missouri State University in 2014 with a BFA in Art, specializing in graphic design. While still in college, I began freelancing graphic design for a Kansas City sign company, and also started drawing and painting custom art. My artistic endeavors have only grown since then! In 2018 I began etching on headstones for two area monument companies, starting with my great uncle’s stone and then my grandpa’s 41 days later. I appreciate being given the opportunity to use my artistic talents to honor the lives of others. I have also undertaken many murals – indoors and out – and enjoy the challenge of creating large-scale artwork and the community involvement that murals inspire. In October 2025, I purchased a local custom apparel/t-shirt business and opened a storefront in Oregon, MO. I have artwork, handmade stained glass and hand-embroidery that my mom and I work on together, and refurbished furniture projects on display and for sale. I now have a dedicated space I can meet with clients to discuss and work on their projects. In addition to my own storefront, the stained glass, embroidery, furniture, other art, and houseplants are on display in one of the large windows of the hardware in Oregon, which has been in my mom’s family for generations. I also currently work as Marketing Coordinator and Art Curator for Gray Manufacturing in St. Joseph, MO, and am a cosmetic tattoo artist with Kurtz Medical Aesthetics in Oregon, MO.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working independently is a challenge, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the support shown to me and my work. As I have many different lines of work, I am always busy!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I draw, paint, design, etch, am a muralist, I flip furniture, and am a cosmetic tattoo artist. I am known for never turning down a job, for being an extremely hard worker, doing a good job at what I do and being appreciative of the work. I am proud of my willingness to tackle projects outside my comfort zone and never backing down from a challenge. Some of my most popular work includes a Chiefs-themed mural in a local building built in the 1800s that now houses a restaurant, and refurbishing vintage chairs to new Chiefs glory. I am also known for my many murals in Maryville, MO where I went to college (Go Bearcats!).
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the creative industries I am apart of will only continue to grow over the coming years. I think consumers will want to subvert AI and continue to want handmade work.
