Community Highlights: Meet Ashley McClellan of MedCurate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley McClellan.

Ashley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story comes full-circle, starting as a proud native of Kansas City, leaving for Texas for school and work, and then returning to our hometown in July of 2019. After attending Southern Methodist University (SMU) and obtaining my BBA in Finance and BA in Spanish, I received my Master’s in Hospital Administration and MBA from Texas Woman’s University, and Doctor of Health Administration in 2024 from Oklahoma State University. I had the good fortune of having wonderful mentors who introduced me to the world of hospital administration, which lead to me serving with HCA Healthcare for almost 18 years as a hospital executive. I am proud to have served as a CEO in 3 Divisions/ Metroplexes, across 5 hospitals and all service lines including Behavioral Health, GME and a College of Nursing. This is what I refer to as “Part 1” of my story.

Part 2 begins with me assessing how I could leverage my experiences and leadership to improve healthcare on a broader scale. As someone who ran hospitals for almost 20 years, most recently as CEO at Research Medical Center, I experienced the impossible dilemma of patients needing our care, yet not having enough staff to care for them safely. Healthcare leaders experience ethical dilemmas on a daily basis, so I left 20 years as a healthcare executive to do something about it, so nobody has to choose who gets to receive care based on staffing.

After leaving the hospital setting in March of 2023, I started building out the technology platform that is now serving as a direct connector for healthcare organizations and healthcare providers today looking to fill extra shifts. MedCurate closes the gap and replaces traditional staffing agencies by leveraging technology to save Money (at least 50%) and Maximize the “Gig” Economy by connecting healthcare providers (like nurses) and healthcare organizations (like hospitals) directly. We are partnering with over 65 healthcare organizations across 6 states to better meet their supplemental staffing needs, and hundreds of healthcare providers are utilizing our platform to “curate” their healthcare career. #shifthappens

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Shifting from a corporate healthcare executive to a health tech entrepreneur was not an easy transition. Going from leading thousands of colleagues to being 1 of 1 without in-house resources and experts on standby is a humbling, yet incredibly rewarding experience.

Another challenge with being an innovator and creating a solution that has not yet existed, is educating potential customers on the solution itself. Think of Uber…when they initially launched and told “riders” to get in the car of a “driver” versus taking a Taxi or Cab, that seemed that a foreign concept. Fast forward to today, and this is a common solution for ridesharing.

MedCurate navigates being on the leading edge of health tech similarly. Although traditional staffing agencies have been the only solution for decades for contract labor, MedCurate approaches this challenge similar to Uber, while improving the cost for healthcare organizations and hourly rate for healthcare providers. We offer quick demo videos and testimonials to help tell our story, and we hope this article can do so as well. (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woY-rThuYfg&t=2s)

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
MedCurate partners to cure the healthcare staffing crisis. We are a powerful marketplace platform that gives healthcare organizations more flexibility over their supplemental staffing—by matching healthcare providers with healthcare organizations—all without an agency go-between. What sets us apart is that everyone wins with MedCurate, and we put the control back in the hands of those actually providing care to our communities.

Unlike our competition or your traditional staffing agency, we leverage technology to benefit both sides of the marketplace and put our customers in control…versus the agency. With our win-win-win partnership model, provider compensation is increased, while organizational costs are decreased.

We are truly a partner who has walked in their shoes. We are clinicians and healthcare leaders with decades of experience, focused on curating solutions that benefit YOU.

Any big plans?
MedCurate is fortunate to have strong partnerships that continue to expand at their existing sites, as well as new sites across the region and United States. We are adding a new product line that will allow our healthcare organizational partners to utilize our technology to manage their internal workforce scheduling, that connects them with our MedCurate external healthcare providers when a shift cannot be filled internally. This automates the process that currently takes 60% of healthcare leaders time to staff their areas daily! We look forward to continuing to scale with sites, roles, and geographies…so please reach out if you want a demo today to [email protected]!
