Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wright.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
From the outside, my story might look like a business journey, but for me it began as a moment of courage, faith, and a deep belief that I was capable of more.
A few years ago, I was working at a bank and struggling to make ends meet. I remember asking for a raise, hoping my hard work and dedication would be recognized. I received a ten-cent raise, and it became a turning point — a moment where I realized I wanted to create a life where my value wasn’t limited by someone else’s decision. I didn’t just want to survive — I wanted to grow, build, and create something meaningful.
Around that time, I started stress-cleaning, and it reminded me that years before, while bartending, I used to clean for a few clients on the side. With a little money saved, a strong work ethic, and a voice inside telling me “You’ll figure it out,” I made the decision to quit my job the very next day. Four days later, in 2019, without a blueprint or formal business training, I launched Getaway Cleaning.
I learned every part of the business hands-on — marketing, scheduling, pricing, finances, client care, and growth. What began with determination evolved into a company trusted by homes and businesses across the area.
My business was built on three core values:
• Comfort & trust – Every customer deserves peace of mind.
• Human before business – Relationships matter.
• Growth through grit – Your background does not define your ceiling.
In addition to Getaway Cleaning, I later launched Pretty in Pink Lemonade, which grew from a simple beverage idea into a recognizable brand presence at events throughout the region. It reflects creativity, authenticity, strong branding, and the reminder that business can be both professional and fun.
I didn’t just become an entrepreneur — I became proof that you can build something out of nothing if you believe in your ability to learn, pivot, and stay resilient. My journey isn’t about perfection or having all the answers — it’s about refusing to settle and choosing to create opportunities where none were handed to me.
Your first step doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to be brave.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would definitely say it has not been a smooth road. Entrepreneurship has had ups, downs, setbacks, and big learning curves, but each challenge shaped me into a stronger leader.
When I first started, I had to learn everything on my own — how to be a boss, how to communicate and lead a team, how to manage employees, time management, how to price jobs correctly, and how to handle business finances and taxes. I was suddenly doing math and decision-making daily in real-time, with no training, no mentor, and no safety net.
Just one year after opening, COVID hit, and I had to shut down and restart completely. There were weeks where I worked 16-hour days, and there were also days where I had no work at all. I went through moments of doubt, exhaustion, and fear of failure, but I kept pushing because I believed in what I was building.
Looking back, even though I wished the road had been easier, I’m grateful for every obstacle — it taught me resilience, patience, and growth. Today, I feel more accomplished, more confident, and much wiser because I didn’t quit, even when it would’ve been easier to walk away.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Getaway Cleaning is more than just a cleaning service — it’s a company built on trust, comfort, consistency, and care. We specialize in residential and commercial cleanings, move-out cleanings, office cleanings, and post-construction cleanings, along with deep cleans and recurring services designed to support long-term cleanliness and peace of mind. Our focus is detail, professionalism, and creating spaces that feel refreshed, reset, and truly livable.
What sets us apart is our people-first approach. We don’t rush, and we don’t treat homes or offices like routine tasks. Every client, every space, and every situation is individual, so we tailor our services to fit real needs — not cookie-cutter checklists. We believe in trust, communication, showing up, and taking pride in the work.
As we continued to grow, Getaway Cleaning was voted Best of Lawrence in 2020, which was a meaningful milestone and a reminder that consistency, care, and genuine service truly make an impact. It validated that what we were building was not only needed, but valued and appreciated by our community.
I’m proud that Getaway Cleaning grew from the ground up — no investors, no shortcuts, and no outside funding — just grit, integrity, and results that keep clients coming back. Our reputation has been built by word-of-mouth, quality service, and a standard that values both the work and the people we serve.
Alongside that, I launched Pretty in Pink Lemonade, where we make fancy, custom-style lemonades that stand out visually and tastefully. We top our drinks with fun and elegant add-ons such as candy, edible flowers, and themed garnishes, making each drink feel like an experience. We are also currently working toward bottling lemonades made-to-order, expanding our brand and bringing a creative, premium twist to a classic favorite.
If there’s one thing I want readers to know, it’s this:
My brands are built with purpose, passion, and heart. I don’t just run businesses — I create experiences that people remember, feel connected to, and trust.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to bet on yourself and truly believe in your own potential, even when others don’t. The world can be tough, and not everyone will support your growth, celebrate your wins, or understand your dreams — and that’s okay. I learned that you have to protect your mindset, surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you succeed, and distance yourself from anyone who doesn’t.
Another major lesson is understanding that success requires discipline over emotion. You can’t let temporary feelings control long-term goals. There will be hard days, slow seasons, doubt, fear, and moments that test you, but you have to keep going and trust that your effort will pay off. Working hard, staying focused, and believing in yourself no matter what has been the biggest key to my growth.
“Make your mind stronger than your emotions and your belief louder than anyone’s doubt.”
