Melissa , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always had the idea of being my own boss one day. Growing up with entrepreneur parents who did exactly that, you could say it was already instilled in me from a young age. I’ve seen how successful they became and I wanted nothing less than what they were able to achieve as immigrants. It was difficult finding a job after getting licensed, until my dad said it was now or never in starting my own business. What was I waiting for? The right time? More experience? Wishing I had more in my saving? Honestly yes, the fear of failing was always a thought in my head. But my parents reassured me that everyone starts somewhere and what really matters is actually STARTING! So, if this doesn’t motivate you to start scared and have that leap of faith, you need to sit down and picture the life you want! You don’t want to regret an opportunity you always dreamt of!
In late June of this year, I found a perfect location in independence, mo, the first place I had went and seen, and I fell in love with the idea of a suite being my own. Next day, I signed the lease at Fivestarplaza and began working on bringing the vision of SkinxMel to life. Since then, I have not stopped making other women feel heard and seen with their skin concerns. As one acne girl to another, healthy skin is possible!
In 2026, I aspire to bring on more services and really broaden up my books!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no. I have a strong support system but it hasn’t been easy putting myself out there in order to build a sustainable clientele. Finding the time to fit everything in one day is tough. I remind myself to not stress to avoid burnout!

I’m an esthetician and I specialize in facials, body treatments such as back facials and hopefully lash lifts in the near future! I’m bilingual and a person of color who understands melanin. I’m proud of how relaxing my facials are, I love a good facial, scalp and shoulder massage so be prepared to emerge yourself in another world. I currently just circadia, skin script and glymed products to achieve amazing results.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I say you are young only once, you experience life only once. Taking a risk and failing means you learned a valuable lesson from it. Avoiding anything that may be “risky” is living in fear. It’s not really living. I never want to regret anything in life so, I just remind myself that it’s okay to fail as long as I tried!
